Miami's Pitbull brings together the sound of reggaeton, Miami bass, and Dirty South rap, delivering a hard-hitting style that appeals to a number of hip-hop factions. EL MARIEL (the title is a reference to a harbor in Miami famous for receiving Cuban immigrants) is Pitbull's sophomore release, and the artist represents for both Miami and his Cuban heritage with his unique mixture of styles. The two singles that preceded the album's release--"Bojangles" and "Ay Chico"--are fierce, club-ready bangers, and production and guest appearances from Lil Jon, Wyclef Jean, the Neptunes, the Ying Yang Twins, and others prove that the artist, even this early on, is playing on a world-class hip-hop stage.

| | Pitbull Money Is Still A Major Issue CD (2005) With DVD
El Mariel music CDs
$9.59 After growing up on a mix of traditional Cuban music and hardcore West Coast rap, Pitbull allows both sounds to influence his particular brand of crunk. Sprinkles of Miami's past also abound on the frenetic album, from the flared-out bass of "Get on the Floor" to "She's Freaky," which recalls the best of 2 Live Crew. The reigning King of Crunk, Lil Jon, supports on three tracks, including the Cuban drum-flecked, bilingual "Culo." That cut is reprised with a minimalist beat on the Miami remix, which is markedly more about the drum than the bass. The most prominent ...

| | Three 6 Mafia Da End CD (1996)
El Mariel songs
$14.09 Da End furthers the horrorcore style that Three 6 Mafia had unveiled on their cult favorite Mystic Stylez debut, except here the overall tone is one of outright violence rather than eerie ominousness. Moreover, the sound quality here is much improved, as producers Juicy J and DJ Paul lay down the sort of hard-hitting, bottom-heavy beats that would define not only the remainder of their career but that of the entire ...

| | Cellador Enter Deception CD (2006) Bonus Track; Japan
El Mariel music CDs
$33.75 Playing European-style power metal from the breadbasket of the American Midwest, Omaha, Nebraska's Cellador surprised the metal underground with their debut album, 2006's ENTER DECEPTION. From the furious riffage, courtesy of guitarists Bill Hudson and Chris Peterson, to the operatic, triple-tracked vocals of lead singer Michael Gremio, Cellador go toe to toe with their continental contemporaries in terms of both screamo punch and metallic speed. Fittingly, tracks like "A Sign Far Beyond" and "No Chances Lost" sound like the histrionic product of Bill & Ted's fictional group, Wyld Stalyns, albeit formed with utter seriousness by the virtuosos down at your local Guitar Center. ENTER DECEPTION is no joke, but it'll make you smile all the same.
In the '90s and early to mid-2000s, the power metal revival movement was a largely European phenomenon. Germany, Holland, Italy, and the Scandinavian ...
