Un Barco Senza Fine album
$11.89 Soul veterans and disco icons Labelle can take pride in an illustrious back catalogue that embraces a myriad of genres and includes contributions to some of the greatest soul recordings of all time. As Patti Labelle & the Blue Belles they contributed backing vocals to many of the most memorable soul singles of the `60s, while the following decade saw them releasing a series of albums that blended gospel-infused soul with the then-emergent beat of disco. This string of successes culminated with 1974's Allen Toussaint-produced NIGHTBIRDS, an album that spawned the monstrous hit single "Lady Marmalade," and made the trio internationally renowned stars.
The Lenny Kravitz- and Gamble & Huff-produced BACK TO NOW, Labelle's first full-length effort since 1976's CHAMELEON, features assured forays into every style that the trio have mastered over the course of their career. "Candlelight" and "Superlover" evoke the slow-burning southern soul of the group's early days, while "How Long" and "Roll Out" update the lush disco of NIGHTBIRDS for modern dance floors.

| | Van Morrison Back On Top CD (1999) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Remastered & Expanded
Un Barco Senza Fine music CDs
$11.89 After a few stylistic divergences wherein he tackled jazz standards and the Mose Allison songbook, Morrison returns to solid R&B/pop with BACK ON TOP. His first album for Virgin's blues imprint Pointblank finds him back on the track of albums like THE HEALING GAME, but is curiously (for an album on a blues label) devoid of blues tunes. The notable exception is the up-tempo blues shuffle "Come Down Geneva" that opens the album and finds Van musing about, among other things, the historical relevance of obscure rockabilly singer Vince Taylor.
Much of the rest of BACK ON TOP finds Morrison in a more pastoral, reflective mode, reveling in the natural wonders of the world around him without venturing into the spacey mysticism of his '80s albums. As is the case on several of Van's '90s albums, there's a song detailing the pitfalls of being a cog in the music business wheel; "New Biography" finds the notoriously private singer casting aspersions on the sources contacted for a book about his life. It wouldn't be classic Van if there weren't a little crankiness mixed in with the splendor.
Additional Tracks
Recorded at The Wool Hall, Bath, England and Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland.
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Mick Green (acoustic & electric guitars); Pee Wee Ellis (soprano, tenor ...

| | Slayer Seasons In The Abyss CD (1990)
Un Barco Senza Fine CD music
$10.25 Slayer built a rabid following with faster-than-light thrash metal, eerie, disturbing lyrics, and bassist/singer Tom Araya's screamed vocals. 1986's REIGN IN BLOOD, a blinding metal classic that clocked in at below a half hour in length and was produced by Rick Rubin, put the band on the metal map. Although Slayer was a bunch of longhairs, it wasn't uncommon to see hardcore skinheads slamming away at the band's shows. But 1988's SOUTH OF HEAVEN alienated many of Slayer's punk fans, as the group slowed their speed metal to a Black Sabbath-like crawl.
1990's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS follows its predecessor's formula. The album was embraced by metal-heads everywhere, eventually earning Slayer its first gold-certified record. The furious opening "War Ensemble" is a throwback to Slayer's earlier speed metal direction, while the album-closing title track is a murky, swarming chunk of metal. Other standouts include the chilling "Dead Skin Mask," which dealt lyrically with notorious killer Ed Gein, "Blood Red," "Expendable Youth," "Hallowed Point," and "Skeletons of Society." For fans of extreme-metal, ...
