Tribaljazz certainly displays a lot of variety and versatility on their self-titled album from Hidden Beach. Some selections feature Art Ellis on alto playing hard bop, there are Afro-Cuban jazz numbers, a bit of folklyric music, and a couple of harmless rap pieces, including one that pays tribute to John Coltrane (with Ellis contributing some effective soprano-sax). Even Jim Morrison of the Doors makes a cameo appearance on "Riders on the Storm." In addition to Ellis, pianist Quinn Johnson takes a series of excellent solos, the percussionists are well featured, and the many vocalists do a fine job. Although not recommended to purists of any kind because there are several styles of music represented on Tribaljazz, sometimes on the same piece, everything they attempt works out. This CD is well worth checking out. ~ Scott Yanow
Tribaljazz: Art Ellis (flute, alto saxophone, synthesizer); John Densmore (drums).
Additional personnel: Alfre Woodard, Michael Franti, Jim Morrison (vocals).
Uncut (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Densmore's inventive percussion draws on an impressive array of jazz and world rhythms." Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Densmore provides the pulse for an engaging polyglot stew that references Latin and oriental music as well as jazz, blues and hip hop." Tribaljazz Music Review Average Rating: (2.5 out of 5 stars) Densmore Jazz At Last John Densmore entered The Doors all those years ago, stating that he was essentially a jazz player.Whilst this thoroughly enhanced Doors music, John never showed himself in a jazz album, till now.
Tribal Jazz is a fine album, easy on the ear, not too challenging for us who are not exactly afficionados.
There are a couple of stand out tracks, The First Time (I Heard Coltrane) being one, and Riders On The Storm, which allows John a little indulgence , being another.
This is comfortable music, not comfortably numb, and I hope to hear more tracks laid down in the not too distant future. Submitted by billdavidson2 (Cork, Ireland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Tribaljazz album
$14.65 As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because with the co-production help of founding Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman, Oliver digs deep into a rich variety of influences for a multifaceted romp through the worlds of pop, jazz, urban/hip-hop, worldbeat, Brazilian, and Latin music. While focusing as always on his classic acoustic guitar and brilliant "vocalese" to convey the lead melodies on the instrumentals, he stretches into edgier blues territory with his lesser-heard electric on "In the Shade of Cool." Joining all-star guests like Fourplay drummer Harvey Mason (who adds his gentle rhythmic ...

| | Four80East En Route CD (2007)
Tribaljazz album
$14.65 The line that separates jazz-electronica from "smooth jazz" (or, let's be honest, from plain old easy listening) can be a treacherously thin one. It's the line that separates Weather Report from, say, Spyro Gyra, and many artists drawn to that borderland end up becoming forever lost in the shifting sands of watered-down funk grooves and wind chimes. Four80East navigate the line pretty well, and if they occasionally stray onto the syrupy side, you get the feeling that they don't really care as long as the grooves are fun and the melodies are attractive -- which they really are, almost all the time. "Five by Five" opens the album on an interesting and funky note, and is quickly followed by the all too aptly titled "Noodle Soup," a tune that is perhaps just a bit too silky and a bit too ...
| | Acoustic Alchemy This Way CD (2007)
Tribaljazz CD music
$12.65 With the release of This Way, Acoustic Alchemy's guitarists Greg Carmichael and Miles Gilderdale celebrate a remarkable two decades since Red Dust & Spanish Lace established the British ensemble as an ever-evolving powerhouse of contemporary jazz. Carmichael and Gilderdale's natural chemistry is very apparent on this set of loose and spirited songs, as is the soloing by the complementing musicians on such jazzy tracks as "Egg," which has a very British, blues-drenched, straight-ahead sound. By contrast, "Ernie" has an exotic Latin jazz flavor complete with great solos by Terry Disley, Jeff Kashiwa, and trombonist Dennis Rollins. Rick Braun makes a guest appearance on "Carlos the King," a racy ...

Tribaljazz album
$6.39 All the flux Hagar's endured since leaving Van Halen results in a record full of introspection that finds the singer engaging in a Heart-flavored power ballad about his new wife and infant daughter ("Kama") and indulging in the metaphysical ("The Yogi's So High (I'm Stoned)"). Hagar's unlikely list of hand-picked contributors also includes Bay Area neighbor Mickey Hart, who adds his percussive talents and even ...
