| | Party Keller Vol. 2 CD
The second volume of Florian Keller's crate-digging Party-Keller series is filled with yet more funky rare grooves from yesteryear. This time, the selections are even more obscure, though no less alluring. The opener, Charmaine Burnette's "(Am I The) Same Girl," is typical: dating back to 1981 and published by Interworld Ltd., the reggae song liberally quotes the trademark horn riff from Dynasty's "Adventures in the Land of Music" (1980) -- best known for being sampled by Camp Lo for "Luchini aka This Is It" and, most infamously, by 2 Live Crew on As Nasty as They Wanna Be ("Coolin'") -- and immediately establishes the semi-bootleg tone of the album. One of the other noteworthy highlights here is Lefties Soul Connection's "Organ Donor," which is a take on DJ Shadow's song of the same name, itself in turn a take on Giorgio Moroder's "Tears" (1972), which Keller had included on his previous volume. This recycled approach to music-making is well evident throughout Party-Keller, Vol. 2 -- even if most, if not all, of the songs here are unfamiliar, they'll likely sound familiar in style. The mixing from track to track is smooth if not especially dexterous, but this keeps the focus on the songs themselves rather than Keller, who plays the role of selector here rather than turntable technician. His efforts result in another fun CD that is refreshingly distinct from the majority of DJ mix albums out there, and it's fitting that an eclectic label like Compost would back a project like this. ~ Jason Birchmeier Party Keller Vol. 2 Music Party Keller Vol. 2 Songs | 1. | Same Girl,, The (Am I) - Charmaine Burnett |

Party Keller Vol. 2 album
$9.59 Off the wall, for sure, Florian Keller's Party-Keller mix for Compost rounds up an eclectic set of idiosyncratic rarities. Trainspotters should have a field day with this one. The selections are all noteworthy and curious -- and quite danceable and groovy -- yet they're hard to come by and probably unknown to all but the most dedicated crate-diggers. Like stateside contemporaries Theo Parrish, Danny Krivit, and Joe Claussell, Keller challenges his listeners, spinning curious, even cultish records from the past that are still relevant to present-day clubbers. He favors records with rhythms to die for, especially of the funk, fusion, electro, hip-hop, and post-disco varieties. Every one of the 14 tracks on Party-Keller is worthy of mention, but there are a few that are especially noteworthy: the sole reggae track here, an upbeat, rootsy late-'70s opener that gets the festivities underway in grand fashion (Althea & Donna's "Uptown Top Rankin"); ...
| | Nortec Collective Tijuana Sessions, Vol. 3 CD (2005)
Party Keller Vol. 2 CD music
$12.19 The third compilation from the loosely organized Nortec Collective (whatever happened to volume two?) offers four years of development from the debut, and that's apparent in a greater cohesion of sound. Where the debut offering sometimes seemed to graft Mexican elements onto electronica and dance music almost as an afterthought, here everything is more integrated, as with Hiperboreal's "Dandy del Sur," where village banda meets spaghetti Western. Sometimes it's plain goofy, such as with Fussible's "Tijuana Makes Me Happy," with its silly English lyric, and sometimes it triggers odd associations -- Bostich's "Tengo la Voz" brings to mind Herb Alpert with ...

| | Georgia Anne Muldrow Olesi: Fragments Of An Earth CD (2006)
Party Keller Vol. 2 songs
$12.25 If nothing else, it can be asserted that Georgia Anne Muldrow is unconventional. To say only this would be to seriously undermine her talents, but the fact that Muldrow refuses to stick to modern (or past, for that matter) definitions of song structure and composition is probably the most conspicuous characteristic of her full-length debut, Olesi: Fragments of an Earth. The album is comprised of 21 tracks, most of which are well under the three-minute mark. This actually ends up working rather nicely, because Muldrow's style -- a kind of stream-of-consciousness, vaguely disjointed, meandering delivery that draws from modern creative jazz, spoken word, spirituals, and soul -- can be hard to follow at times. This made her EP a little difficult (or at least tiring) to listen to, but here, with shorter ...
