| | Heroes Del Silencio Tour 2007 CDs (2008)
El Mar No Cesa CD music
$17.15 Ten years after breaking up after a decade of international success as one of the premier rock en español bands of their time, Heroes del Silencio reunited for a brief ten-date concert tour of the Spanish-language world in 2007 in commemoration of their 20-year anniversary. The tour included performances in Buenos Aires, Guatemala City, Mexico City, Monterrey, Los Angeles, Sevilla, Zaragoza, and Valencia. Released in a few different formats, the live album Tour 2007 documents the band's reunion tour, primarily the Mexico City performance. Beginning with their recording debut in 1987 with the Héroe de Leyenda EP, Heroes del Silencio were one of the premier rock en español bands of their time, rivaled by only Soda Stereo, Maná, and La Ley in terms of influence and popularity. However, despite its stature, the band only released four studio albums (El Mar No Cesa [1988], Senderos de Traición [1990], El Espíritu del Vino [1993], and Avalancha [1995]) before breaking up in 1997 amid insurmountable internal tension, particularly between lead vocalist Enrique Bunbury and lead guitarist Juan Valdivia. ...
| | Aquamen Do The Alkeehol! (And Other Hits) CD (1999)
El Mar No Cesa music CDs
$12.09 Although a surf band, it seems odd that this San Francisco sextet named themselves the Aquamen when even a cursory glance at their song titles suggests that, like W.C. Fields, they never touch the stuff. Rather like Man or Astroman?'s retro-futuristic schtick, these "legendary masters of surf intoxica" produce instrumental surf (theremin and odd sound effects are mixed in with the organ and heavily-reverbed guitars), with all of the songs named after different types of liquors and mixed drinks and liner notes about the joys of intoxication. It's like if Foster Brooks and Otis the Drunk joined the Surfaris. Actually, unlike on their earlier two albums (plus assorted singles and EPs), the Aquamen do branch out slightly from their dipsomaniacal monomania on 1999's Do the Alkeehol! (And Other Hits). Songs this time include the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass-styled "Beans 'N Rice" (because what goes better with booze than burritos?), "Panty Raid" (because nothing says liquored-up fun like sexual harassment), and "Cuz Yo a Woman" (because apparently they're too drunk to either enunciate or use halfway decent grammar). But, as with any surf combo, the real question concerning the Aquamen is if they deliver the goods musically, and, much more than many similar surf revival bands, they do. Neither slavishly dedicated to the archetypes of the style -- a couple of tracks even dare to include vocals, even if they're harshly processed and near-inaudible on the title track -- nor insisting that everything they do be appreciated through triple layers of self-protective irony, the quintet simply play the type of music they enjoy with style and ...
| | Charged Particles CD (1993)
El Mar No Cesa songs
$13.15 The most exciting and creative music being made today crosses stylistic boundaries and blends multiple traditions to create vital new sounds. Charged Particles features three of the country's young virtuosos doing just that for contemporary electric jazz. Caleb Hutslar is a keyboard wizard whose classically trained technique and imaginative improvisational skills boggle the mind. Mike Rak is an inventive and sophisticated acoustic and electric bassist. Along with fiery drummer Jon Krosnick, these players are making some of the most electrifying jazz in the world today. All of the trio's music has a distinctly acoustic sensibility, despite the fact that the members play both electric and acoustic instruments. The group's small size allows for great sensitivity and spontaneity among the players, making each performance an enchanting improvisational exploration. The band's energy level is always high, even when they are cooking at a volume no louder than a whisper, or floating through the melody of a romantic ballad. Each piece they play brims with the fun the players have together and with the admiration they have for each other. Charged Particles are a treat to hear! The trio's repertoire blends jazz styles with elements from Latin music, classical music, funk, and more. The group's original compositions are mixtures of elaborate orchestration and opportunities for creative improvised solos. And they bring a similar approach to playing arrangements of tunes by other jazz artists and traditional jazz standards, including favorites by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Richard Rogers, and other composers of America's most popular songs from decades ago, each played with a new twist. Charged Particles made its public debut on National Public Radio's live performance program, "Detroit Jazz Alive", originating in Detroit, Michigan. The group's one-hour live performance drew wide attention. Performances since then have been at festivals and clubs around the country. In addition to its own headline performances, the band has opened for national recording artists such as Stanley Jordan, Yanni, and Al DiMeola, and the group has had such international mega-star drummers as Peter Erskine and Dennis Chambers sit in with them. Charged Particles released their first CD in 1994 on Schoolkids Records and their second, "Sparks," in 2002 on BOPO Records. The CDs have received airplay on over 300 radio stations world-wide and have been praised by national jazz critics in such outlets as Jazziz Magazine, Jazz Times Magazine, Jazz and Blues Report, Pulse! Magazine, and many more. A performance by the group was included on the 1996 compilation ...
