The title of Stevie Wonder's 20th CENTURY MASTERS installation, THE BEST OF STEVIE WONDER, is something of a misnomer in that it only includes work from 1963 to 1971, the years he was still recording under strict Motown supervision. Yet the monumental importance of '70s albums like INNERVISIONS and SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE can tend to overshadow Stevie's accomplishments of the '60s, and THE BEST OF serves to remind listeners that his early music was just as exuberant, well-crafted, and overflowing with talent.
Nearly every track here rocketed to the top of the R&B and pop charts, including the live recording of "Fingertips Pt. 2" and the propulsive "Uptight (Everything's Alright)." Just when the world at large was ready to write off these '60s legends, they turned around and knocked an album full of engaging, even inspiring tunes that brought back fond memories of their glory days. After years of internal strife, drug problems, and other famous rock star pitfalls, the trio had decidedly seen better days, but this was the album that seemed capable of turning it all around for them. Pay particular attention to the transcendent "Wasted on the Way," an unflinching look at the trials of the past brightened by an acceptance and ability to move forward. The sunny folk-pop of this tune and Stills' "Southern Cross," a song about self-realization and renewed inspiration, are the keys to DAYLIGHT AGAIN, which finds our heroes coming up for air after too much time spent in the spiritual shadows.
