Growing up in a music-loving family, Midori began piano at age five and loved to listen to jazz, her father's favorite music. At age 22 she began to sing in this art form herself. In 1988, she took the gold prize in The Asakusa Jazz Contest, a recognized major contest in Japan for this genre. It was a turning point in her career as a professional jazz singer. To further perfect her singing, she decided to further study English at Loyola Intensive English Program in New Orleans in 1990. During her stay, she encountered world-famous trumpet player Jamil Sharif and joined his band at Maison Bourbon, a jazz club located in the heart of the French Quarter. Returning to Japan the following year, she concentrated on live performances. In 1999, she was invited to appear at the 'Jazz Vocal Jamboree,'a summit event that is open only to highly recognized vocalists in Japan. She recorded her first album 'Shine' in New Orleans in 2001, produced by Jamil Sharif and released by Umdah Music in the United States. In 2006 Midori released her lateset album, "Mona Lisa" featuring five romantic vocal ballads and an original instrumental by pianist /arranger ,Johnny Todd. Mona Lisa album
$9.09 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their ...

| | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009)
Mona Lisa music CDs
$14.45 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, how ...

| | Herb Alpert South Of The Border CD (1964) Remastered; Special Edition
Mona Lisa album
$9.99 Herb Alpert/Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass/Tijuana Brass: Herb Alpert (trumpet); John Pisano (electric guitar); Tonni Kalash (trumpet); Bob Edmondson (trombone); Lou Pagani (piano); Pat Senatore (bass guitar); Nick Ceroli (drums).
Herb Alpert was still using an array of SoCal studio all-stars as his Tijuana Brass when South of the Border (1964) began to restore the combo's good name after the modest Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Vol. 2 (1963) failed to ignite a fire in listener's ears. In his essay accompanying Shout! Factory's 2005 Signature Series reissue of South of the Border, Alpert comments that the Sol Lake composition "Mexican Shuffle" "opened a new door for me." That passageway meant the loss of the Tijuana Brass' practically forced mariachi style and the rise of Alpert's approach in arranging familiar melodies in fresh, creative settings. Nowhere would this stylistic progression be as pronounced as in the horn-driven updates of several then-concurrent chart hits. For instance, the mod sonic wrinkle in "Girl from Ipanema" emits a darkness veiled in mystery, directly contrasting the light buoyancy of "Hello! Dolly" or the footloose feel of the Beatles' "All My Loving." ...

$11.39 "Need some jazz that's a little more adventurous and free? Chaotic? Unpredictable? Check out it's okay to sit in the middle of the road henry (8bells), a new album by a five-piece who call themselves Renwicke..I should say right now that I am a huge fan of improvisational jazz, because I never know what to expect. The music, the sounds, the mood, it can go anywhere at anytime, sometimes throughout a song. There isn't an overall mood of the album, it's just "press record and see what comes out of us". The album has songs ...

| | Live At Subs Live@Subs CD (2008) (Import)
Mona Lisa music CDs
$18.55 They come from the East of Melbourne, Australia where the hills are big and the beats are even bigger. Following up their previous EP 'Memoirs Of An Ashtray', Live@Subs returned with the new EP Holiday in Japan fortified with the title track which has been receiving some huge support from Triple J. In keeping with their cheeky nature and definite influences from the likes of Sublime, Bob Marley & The Chilli Peppers, the Holiday In Japan single is all about living the good life and along with five other killer tunes the EP is chockfull of funk-filled riffs and reggae-rockn beats. Each descending from their own separate musical backgrounds, Live@Subs is an interesting combination of life long musicians. From that of Guitarist/Singer Sub who played with US group The Toledo Show, touring the US during 1997 & 1998, followed by an Australian tour in late '98 finishing at the Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival. Or Deef Live@Subs drummer/singer, x-drummer of heavy grooves band Another Race (aka Biscuit), and bassist Wingman. Now playing together after knowing each other since they were in school, "the Subs" boys take a somewhat different approach ...
