| | Laura Pausini From The Inside CD (2002)
Alegria CD music
$10.19 Italian pop star Laura Pausini's first English LP, From the Inside, is a guilty pleasure for any closeted fan of easy-listening pop (Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Backstreet Boys). The album kicks off with the glorious "I Need Love," a song that earned her U.S. exposure when the ABC daytime drama All My Children used it as a love theme. Other highlights include "Every Day Is a Monday," a Europop mainstream song laced with a wah-wah guitar, and the Dion-like "Without You." Pausini is clearly influenced by Dion. Her voice doesn't soar to the heights that Dion reaches, but she comes close in songs such as "If That's Love" and "Every Day Is a Monday." Like most albums filled with love songs, "surrender" is a theme throughout From the Inside, especially in the funky ballad "Do I Dare" and the Europop "Surrender." This is one album to surrender to. ~ Christina Fuoco
Personnel: Laura Pausini (background vocals); Michael Landau (guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, sitar); Dorian Cheah (guitar, programming); John Shanks, Russ Desalvo, Rusty Anderson, Riccardo Galardini, Adam Phillips, Carl Sturken (guitar); Ramon Stagnaro, Tim Pierce (acoustic guitar); Patrick Leonard (piano, keyboards, programming); Dado Parisini (keyboards, bass synthesizer); Eric Kupper, Daniel Chase, Jeff Bova, K.C. | | Lhasa CD (2009)
Alegria music CDs
$14.95 Lhasa's earlier work included arrangements that drew on ranchera and Gypsy music, as well as American, Canadian, and Mexican folk, French chanson, and pop. The international flavor is more subtle on LHASA, without vanishing entirely. The songs on the album all deal with love, usually of the obsessive, hopeless, and doomed variety, and even at her most seductive, as on the subtle rock/tango "The Lonely Spider," Lhasa's vocals hint at grief and despair. The song's Latin standup bassline and subtle chiming guitar combine with a muted tango beat to give the song a deeply melancholy air. "Is Anything Wrong" is a bluesy pop song with a haunting melody carried by Lhasa's melisma-drenched vocals. Pedal steel supplies a mournful accent and flamenco handclaps ...

| | Mana Donde Jugaran Los Ninos? CD (1994) (Import) New Edition; Canada
Alegria CD music
$9.89 On DONDE JUGARAN LOS NINOS ("Where Will the Children Play?"), these pop-rockers from Mexico show that having a great time and a credible social conscience can indeed go hand-in-hand. Loaded with hits, this is surely one of the band's most celebrated, exciting albums. Their driving ragga-rock mixes with synth-laden pop, acoustic balladry and a youthful, Mexican romantic sensibility. Fher's light, breathy voice takes flight over Cesar "Vampiro" Lopez' (of later Jaguares fame) choppy, deliberate guitar-playing while Alex offers steady, tight drumming that's always full of little accents and subtleties.
The album opens with the party favorite, "De Pies a Cabeza," ("From Head to Toe"), which proffers soft love verses that give way to a thrilling double-time chorus with Fher calling out "Yeah, wha-yo-yo-yo" to the sound of happy horn lines. "Oye Mi Amor" is another classic--if the late-'70s Police sang a song in Spanish about joining bodies in sexual union, it would sound like this. Surprisingly credible perhaps, the title track is an urgent call for attention to environmental destruction ...
| | Cristian Lo Mejor De Mi CD (1997)
Alegria music CDs
$7.69 Lo Mejor de Mi isn't a hits collection -- it is the first album Cristian has released on Ariola/BMG records. However, it is designed to generate hits, which is almost as good as a hits collection. There isn't much variety on the album -- basically, it's almost all smooth romantic ballads -- but Cristian is blessed with an appealing voice and producers who know how to pick material that showcases it at its best. As a result, Lo Mejor de Mi does come pretty close to being the best Cristian has to offer. ~ Terry Jenkins
LO MEJOR DE MI was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance.
