| | Harry Connick, Jr Chanson Du Vieux Carre CD Harry Connick, Jr Discography of CDs
Harry Connick Jr. has no shortage of musical credibility, not least because of his writing and arranging skills (which often take a backseat to his better-known skills as a singer and pianist). CHANSON DU VIEUX, a 2007 album that coincided with the release of OH, MY NOLA, takes on New Orleans through the lens of post-Hurricane Katrina trauma, yet, like its counterpart, is equal parts history lesson and joyous celebration. Connick doesn't sing here; instead he arranges a host of classic N'awlins gems (from the likes of Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and Professor Longhair) for big band, while adding tasteful accompaniment on piano. Exciting charts, superior musicianship, and a deep love of the Big Easy drive this fun release.
Personnel: Harry Connick Jr. (piano); James Greene, Charles 'Ned' Goold (alto saxophone); Jerry Weldon, Mike Karn (tenor saxophone); Dave Schumacher (baritone saxophone); Derrick Gardner, Joe Magnarelli, Leroy Jones, Roger Ingram (trumpet); Craig Klein, John Allred, Lucien Barbarin, Mark Mullins (trombone); Joe Barati (bass trombone); Neal Caine (bass instrument); Arthur Latin (drums).
Down Beat (p.59) - "[Connick is] heard deep within the rhythms section....When he steps out, it's with a spare style that nudges rather than blows all over the groove..." Chanson Du Vieux Carre Music Harry Connick, Jr Chanson Du Vieux Carre Songs Chanson Du Vieux Carre Review

| | Charlie Haden Not In Our Name CD (2005)
Chanson Du Vieux Carre
$15.35 With a cover that directly references bassist Charlie Haden's first recording under his own name, 1969's LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA, this 2005 album features an updated version of the LMO ensemble. As on the earlier disc, the spirit here is one of peaceful protest; while the former outing was in reaction to the Vietnam War, this record takes the George W. Bush administration to task, especially regarding the war in Iraq.
Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though ...

| | Harry Connick, Jr Oh, My Nola CD (2007)
Chanson Du Vieux Carre
$8.99 Naturally, there is a healthy dose of old school jazz and swing here, with treatments of "Hello Dolly" and "Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey?" that do their best to conjure the ghost of Louis Armstrong strolling down Decatur. Connick does spry, spirited versions of the Allen Toussaint classics "Working in a Coal Mine" and "Yes We Can," keeping the feel brash and funky, while his originals (which are explicitly about New Orleans) blend surprisingly well with these ...

| | Spotlight On Keely Smith CD (1994)
Chanson Du Vieux Carre
$9.09 Most listeners know of Keely Smith as Louis Prima's deadpan partner in crime on such Prima Vegas workouts as "Just a Gigolo" and "Jump, Jive & Wail." But Keely proved to have an appealing style all her own aside from the Prima show. Basically an unpretentious belter, she consistently demonstrated a winning, stick-to-the-melody approach to singing that was surprisingly musical. Currently, the only Keely Smith available on Capitol is this welcome entry ...
