| | Anthrax Among The Living CDs (1987) With DVD; Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Always Is Never The Same
$21.94 When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed from punk and hardcore and mammoth guitar riffing from metal, and featured thought-provoking lyrics. AMONG THE LIVING not only served as Anthrax's commercial breakthrough, but (along with seminal releases by Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer) the album brought this new musical form to the forefront.
The members of Anthrax ...

| | Pilate Caught By The Window CD (2004) Import
Always Is Never The Same
$23.29 Previous to Keane's smash debut Hopes and Fears, Pilate made great inroads in Canada with a similar brand of melancholic Coldplay-like emotionally driven pop. This album only exemplifies this niche as lead singer Todd Clark's high ethereal vocals bring to mind a mix of Chris Martin and Thom Yorke on the mellow opener "Endgame." The song is basically a teaser, though, at two minutes. More developed and more appealing is the lushly textured "Melt Into the Walls," thanks to drummer Bill Keeley's eclectic tempo. Guitarist Chris Greenough accents the song without stealing Clark's power. Pilate successfully and consistently tugs at your heartstrings, although the album's masterpiece "Into Your Hideout" is a foot-stomping power pop tune. Complete with dreamy harmonies, tight arrangements and a great flow, the song is well worth the album on its own. Fortunately, Pilate refuse to rest on that laurel alone. The soft, tender touches of "Mercy" sounds like Travis circa "Sing" before opening up slightly later on. The Brit band is also evoked on "Don't Waste Your Breath," a somber yet shining tune that sounds like a mix of the Beatles and Starsailor. The moody downbeat of "Fall Down" ...
| | Lappetites Before The Libretto CD (2005) (Import)
Always Is Never The Same
$15.15 Founded by U.K. artist Kaffe Matthews as an open-ended collective pursuing various creative goals, the Lappetites first appeared on record with Before the Libretto, named because it came about, as the brief liner notes indicate, "whilst researching the opera." The four-person lineup -- Matthews, French musician Eliane Radigue, noted German performer AGF, and Japanese composer Ryoko Kuwajima -- subsume themselves completely into the Lappetites identity throughout, as no individual song, musical, or other credits are provided. The result honestly feels like a multi-part collaboration instead of, say, a supergroup -- it's impossible to readily guess who provided what outside of a vocal performance or two ("Stop No. 394 Falkirk Street" has its unnerving musical moans contrasted by Matthews' not-at-all reassuring delivery, while Kuwajima clearly performs on the lullaby-gone-strange ...
