PARIS KILLS is a 10-track release by Finnish rockers 69 Eyes, featuring "Crashing High," "Betty Blue," and "Stigmata."
These Helsinki-based hard rockers do the horror/goth/glam thing with panache, setting chunky rhythms against cavernous, echo-laden guitars and Jyrki 69's deep, Iggy-like purr. PARIS KILLS is a 2000 recording, re-released by Cleopatra Records in 2006, and features the killer single "Betty Blue."

With Angels, the Helsinki vampires known as the 69 Eyes offer a flip-side sequel to their 2005 effort, Devils. "The slutty rocker to the seductive sister" is the way the goth-metal band perfectly puts it, and if Devils earned the band a loyal following among the black-nail-polish underground, Angels is designed to blow the 69 Eyes up to Type O Negative status (none of this applies to their native Finland, where they are already absolutely huge). Deep-voiced and dead as far as you can tell, Jyrki 69's lead vocals still bear a strong resemblance to Peter Steele -- or shamelessly rip him off if you believe the detractors -- but there's a new, strikingly loose way he uses his pipes that brings to mind Suicide's Alan Vega at his most Elvis. Gene Simmons' 1978 Kiss solo album turned out to be the most surprising of the bunch. Primarily known as the author of Kiss's heaviest songs, Simmons had always been an avid Beatles fan. His album shows the influence of Fab Four, and also includes songs that feature orchestras and reflect the then-thriving disco scene. The album is also notable because it benefits from the contributions of many '70s rock stars, like Aerosmith's Joe Perry, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielson, Cher, Bob Seger, Donna Summer, Helen Reddy, and the Doobie Brothers' Jeff "Skunk" Baxter.
Granted, some of the tracks are reminiscent of Simmons' thunder rock (such as "Radioactive" and "See You in Your Dreams"), but the majority of the tracks are more musically unpredictable. "See You Tonite," "Always Near You/Nowhere to Hide," "Man of 1,000 Faces," and "Mr. Make Believe" recall John, Paul, George, and Ringo, while "Burning Up With Fever," ...

Prior to joining Kiss, Peter Criss spent years honing his drumming chops in numerous New York City-area bands, playing other styles besides Kiss's heavy metal. For his 1978 Kiss solo album, Criss reconnected with a member of one of his old bands, Stan Penridge, with whom he co-wrote the majority of the tunes.
Sensing that most fans would want to hear more ballads in the vein of his 1976 hit with Kiss, "Beth," several are included: "Don't You Let Me Down," "Easy Thing," "Kiss the Girl Goodbye," and "I Can't Stop the Rain." Unaffected by commercial distractions and unbowed by widespread indifference outside deeply metallic realms, death metal stalwarts Incantation continue to motor on unchallenged, arriving in 2004 at their seventh album, the far from subtly titled conceptual work Decimate Christendom. And sure enough, the opening title track sets about attempting just that, the fact that the group is here reduced to a trio for the first time (guitarist and lone remaining founding member John McEntee assuming vocal duties as well) having no visible effect on their churning death metal brutality. The positively frantic "Dying Divinity" carries on the pillaging in similarly unstoppable fashion, while the no less spellbinding (or maybe simply overwhelming -- take your pick) "Oath of Armageddon" slows the pace down some on its way to a grinding descent. Sadly, what follows doesn't quite measure up, and little about the likes of "Merciless Tyranny" and "Thorns of Everlasting Persecution" leaves a distinctive mark on the senses.
