A truly inventive Aerosmith album, still suffused with a gloriously raspy sense of the blues, but quietly evocative in its timbre and approach. It showed Tyler working out lyrics that were so much more than simple cars and girls fodder, 'Adam's Apple' theorizing that creation could quite possibly have occurred with an alien mothership landing on earth and setting the wheels of the human race in motion. 'Sweet Emotion' throbbed slowly into life, 'Big Ten Inch Record', a salty R&B work-out, while 'You See Me Crying' was heightened and given body by a warm orchestration. A clear steeple of great work amid a skyline of repeating successes.

When Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer left the Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster, respectively, they created the first prog-rock supergroup. ELP's 1971 debut was full of just as much bombast, technical facility, and brash classical-rock fusion as prog admirers could have hoped. A large part of the band's appeal was the keyboard mastery of Emerson, who shows both superhuman chops and sophisticated compositional abilities on the classically tinged instrumental "The Barbarian," which opens the album.
"Take a Pebble" and "Lucky Man" represent the more pop-oriented ballad side of the ELP sound, for which bassist and singer Greg Lake is chiefly responsible. John Lee Hooker's sprawling, six-decade-long discography is impossible to boil down to a single-disc best-of, though that hasn't stopped dozens of record companies from trying. Hip-O's 20-track THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION is as well-selected and comprehensive a set as one is likely to find, however, drawing as it does from Hooker's entire career and choosing the best of his recordings from his endless succession of label associations.
The disc kicks off with one of the Hook's anthems, "Boogie Chillen," a raw, solo electric stomp from his earliest days at Modern Records, and one of the finest blues performances ever put to tape. Hooker went on to adopt powerful electric bands for his tenures with Chess, Impulse, Vee Jay, and other labels, and that sound is well represented here (see the classic "Boom Boom" or "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer"). The artist's late-period collaborations with the likes of Carlos Santana and Bonnie Raitt are also included, rounding out this excellent if cursory overview of the blues icon.
