(25 Customer Reviews)
The sophomore solo effort from No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani capitalizes on the qualities that made her debut, LOVE ANGEL MUSIC BABY, a success, namely the hip-hop-infused club sound she laid down on that album's smash single "Hollerback Girl." As on LAMB, SWEET ESCAPE boasts production work from the Neptunes, among other talented trackmasters (including Akron and No Doubt member Tony Kanal).
In general, Stefani backs off the new wave aesthetic she's usually associated with, although tunes like "Wonderful Life" and "Florescent" still burst with the quirky pop energy of the early 1980s. Instead, the majority of THE SWEET ESCAPE revels in the flashy glamour of the club vibe (as the cover photo of Stefani in sunglasses and platinum suggests), riding propulsive, rickety beats and singalong choruses, as on the hands-in-the-air title track or the Neptunes-helmed single "Wind It Up" (which features samples from THE SOUND OF MUSIC). The album missteps occasionally, but there is enough fun, fizzy dance-pop here to keep Stefani in the spotlight, and to satisfy her growing legion of fans.

Entertainment Weekly (p.94) - "THE SWEET ESCAPE has a surprisingly moody, lightly autobiographical feel." -- Grade: B- Q (p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Stefani maintains an admirably off-kilter sound, catchy yet electronically edgy." Gwen Stefani Sweet Escape Songs Sweet Escape Music Review Average Rating: (3.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The Sweet Escape is Excellent What can I say, Gwen always puts out great music. You can see that Madonna is a huge influence on her music. My favorite tracks on the album have to be Wind It Up, Fluorescent, Wonderful Life, U Started It, and The Sweet Escape. And for you people that rated this album with 3 stars or less, you would'nt know what good music is if it slapped you in the face. Submitted by Steven (Las Cruces, NM) Was This Review Helpful? C-O-O-L, YOU GO GIRL ! I love all the songs. I bought the CD a month ago and I play it everyday and try to sing along till I learn every song. I am hung up on "Gwen Stefani" music and I even went out and bought her new perfume called L.A.M.B.! It smells great! Submitted by marilynncoats (Hammond,La.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Gwen Stefani has gone Ghetto-Fabulous Please save the cheesy lyrics for Britney's comeback. This "bubble-gum pop electric" is not her. Submitted by YaYa (San Diego, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not true Gwen. I agree with what the lady from Maryland said. Gwen was much better in no doubt. That isn't nostalgia talking, that's just plain fact. It feels to me like her music now is manufactured for a superficial club oriented public. Aside from a few catchy tunes the album lacks the punch and meat that No Doubt's music had. And before people jump on me about no Doubt's music, I'm saying that No Doubt could write songs with Gwen that were catchy and "dancy" and get away with it much better than whomever is writing for her currently. Sweet Escape album
$13.15 Historically, it's a tricky endeavor for the singer from an enormously successful band to embark on a solo career. Gwen Stefani, the glamorous vocalist for No Doubt, sidesteps the issue on her first solo album, LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, by largely eschewing the No Doubt sound. In its place, there's a strong emphasis on the R&B and hip-hop flavors that were hinted at in preceding No Doubt records. Towards that end, Stefani gamely enlists the assistance of Dr. Dre, the Neptunes, Andre 3000 of Outkast, and others, on an album that references everything from Japanese pop culture ("Harajuku Girls") to FIDDLER ON THE ROOF ("Rich Girl," featuring rapper Eve). Sensual R&B rhythms, frenetic hip-hop beats, and yes, the occasional pop/rock echo of No Doubt, all share space on LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, filtered through a fun-loving, party-starting sensibility.

| | Fergie The Dutchess CD (2006)
Sweet Escape music CDs
$10.89 The first release on Black Eyed Pea will.i.am's record label, THE DUTCHESS seems intent on giving Beyonce, Kelis, and every female pop/R&B singer a run for her money. With production help from Polow the Don and will.i.am (who also contributes raps to a couple of songs), Fergie delivers a record that kicks out spare club tracks inspired by Missy Elliott and M.I.A. (such as the disc's lead-off single "London Bridge"), alongside ...
| | Justin Timberlake Futuresex / Lovesounds CD (2006)
Sweet Escape songs
$9.59 Music critics and highbrow listeners may look down their nose at Justin Timberlake, doubting that the celebrated former N'Sync leader is good for more than light, frothy dance-pop. Timberlakes's sophomore effort, FUTURESEX/LOVESOUNDS, should make both camps rethink that stance. While the album certainly sets out to entertain, it's also full of ambitious, well-constructed grooves that prove the superstar is serious about getting down and dirty. The album steps up the Michael Jackson-influenced sound of JUSTIFIED by delving deeper into club music, hip-hop, and funk, creating a bumping, writhing soundtrack for a set of songs unabashedly about sex.
Timberlake spared no expense recruiting some of the best producers on the scene. Beatmaker extraordinaire Timbaland is a primary collaborator, and his experimental stutter-funk landscapes make for the album's best moments ...

| | David Byrne Rei Momo CD (1989)
Sweet Escape music CDs
$11.65 David Byrne's first release after the breakup of the Talking Heads is not only a logical progression from their final album, NAKED, it's his first truly pop-oriented solo work. (THE CATHERINE WHEEL was a dance score, and MUSIC FROM THE KNEE PLAYS a collaboration with avant-garde composer Robert Wilson based on New Orleans second-line music.)
Built on his recent fondness for Latin and Afro-Cuban musical styles (Byrne founded the Brazilophilic Luaka Bop label around this time as well), REI MOMO is half music lesson--the liner notes explain which songs are sambas, cumbias, etc.--and half late-period Talking Heads album. The combination works surprisingly well, with the highlight being the witty "Make Believe Mambo," co-starring Kirsty MacColl, who would later make her own album of Latinate pop, 2000's TROPICAL BRAINSTORM. This track and others sound so much like tunes from ...

| | Best Of Linda Ronstadt: The Capitol Years CDs (2006)
Sweet Escape songs
$17.45 Throughout this 46-track compilation, the honey-voiced Ronstadt showcases her interpretive skills on vibrant covers of songs by Randy Newman ('"Bet No One Ever Hurt This Bad"), Fred Neil ("The Dolphins") Johnny Cash ("I Still Miss Someone"), and James Taylor ("You Can Close Your Eyes"), to name but a few artists. Ronstadt would play genre hop-scotch in the years to come, but these four early albums are an example of some her finest, most focused efforts, and a quintessential document of the Laurel Canyon sound.
2-CD compilation of Linda Ronstadt's early work on their label. This collection will include all four of Linda's 4 solo LPs that were released from 1969 through 1974, as well as some previously unreleased studio and live tracks. This package will include the entire ...

| | Sugarhill Gang CD (1980)
Sweet Escape CD music
$14.05 While the Sugar Hill Gang's seminal track, "Rapper's Delight," has dated a bit since it was first released in 1979, it's important to remember its cataclysmic impact on music. It wasn't the first rap song and it wasn't the best, but when "Rapper's Delight" broke through to the airwaves, it put rap music on the map and started a revolution. This 2008 DBK Works reissue of the Sugar Hill Gang's self-titled debut LP ...
