By the time HOTTER THAN JULY was released in 1980, Stevie Wonder had spent the '70s making his transition into adulthood by redefining pop music and winning widespread public and critical acclaim (along with a boatload of Grammys). As was usually the case on previous albums, Wonder's first release of the '80s featured him playing a variety of instruments, supported by a number of famous guests including Angela Winbush, Michael Jackson, Betty Wright and members of the Gap Band.
The result was an album of breezy love songs ("Rocket Love"), deliciously upbeat pop ("I Ain't Gonna Stand For It") and a thinly disguised tribute to Bob Marley ("Master Blaster [Jammin']"). But the one song that Wonder gave himself most to was "Happy Birthday," a relentlessy positive compostion specifically written as part of this gifted artist's fight to get Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday recognized as a national holiday. Stevie Wonder eventually won that fight and by the mid-80s, his dream had become a reality.

Kid Rock's self-titled fourth major-label outing finds him proudly reaffirming his blue-collar roots and love of classic rock and outlaw country music by inviting a bunch of famous friends to join him and his Twisted Brown Trucker Band in kicking out the Detroit-style jams. Any rap nuances are subtle, with turntable scratches sprinkled over the mid-tempo rocker "Rock 'n' Roll Pain Train," a hip-hop cadence pacing "Hillbilly Stomp" (featuring Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top), and the kind of fanfare-laced "Intro" that you'd expect from someone who put out an album entitled COCKY.
Wielding an impressive array of stringed instruments, this Michigan native moves easily from a straightforward reading of Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love" to resurrecting "Hard Night for Sarah," a previously unrecorded song from the Bob Seger archives. Rock's appealing croon not only works well on the aforementioned Seger song, but on the Harry Nilsson-like "Run Off to LA," his reunion with former paramour Sheryl Crow. Otherwise, he's mixing it up with Hank Williams, Jr. on the lascivious "Cadillac Pussy," recasting David Allen Coe's "Son of the South" as the hyper-boogie of "Son of Detroit," and running through the autobiographical anthem "I Am."
2003 album finds Kid Rock sounding like he has new role models like Hank Williams Jr. (who is featured on the album) and David Allen Coe. Atlantic.

This album's title is a tribute to Prince Be's newborn son, Christian, through whom Be has experienced his own rebirth. DEAR CHRISTIAN...is an exploration of new territory for a group pegged as the hippies of hip-hop only a few short years before. Nevertheless, PM Dawn put together an album that is more John Lennon (or at least early Lenny Kravitz) than Puff Daddy or LL Cool J. Tracks like "Being So Not For You," "If I Could Be Your Star" and "Screaming At Me" show the depth in Prine Be's songwriting as well as the group's direct focus on fresh-sounding material.
More pop/R&B than hip-hop, DEAR CHRISTIAN is an album that fights specific genre classification due to the band's many influences. Blues, pop, soul, rock and the sounds of Marvin Gaye and John Lennon reverberate throughout the album's thirteen tracks.

Though they came out of the late-'80s grunge crowd, Ohio's Afghan Whigs always seemed a little too smart for rehashed '70s metal cliches. Throughout their career, they've moved further and further away from their hard-rock roots, buoyed by the anguished lyrics of frontman Greg Dulli (who had enough vocal presence to sing Lennon's parts in the dramatized Beatles film Backbeat). Over a sonic landscape that mixes '70s R&B with seductive, timeless rock & roll hooks, Dulli spins one dysfunctional passion play after another, dredging up the ugly emotions that most people prefer to keep hidden. Dulli uses them as fuel for his artistic fire, reveling in the catharsis and connecting with those who've been there (even if they'd rather not admit it). Sax and keyboards provide a welcome variety of tone to what's still ultimately a guitar-based rock record (albeit one that shuns cliche like a chronic ailment).
