Eminem's RELAPSE, a double album released after five years of recorded silence, a record featuring Dr. Dre behind the boards for the first time since 2000, faced no shortage of the relentless pressure of expectations. A narrative of survival after facing down his demons in rehab unfurled with Eminem's usual twisted Swift-ian wit, RELAPSE should disappoint few fans (or critics for that matter) with its patented mix of hilariously spit venom and delirious self-loathing.
Like Darren Aronofsky's adaptation of REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, 2009's RELAPSE finds the full horror element in drug addiction. Eminem's raps, for all their over-the-top humor, have always conjured up images fit for Fangoria, but as he comes out of rehab, seeking solace from his demons, Mr. Mathers amps up the gore on RELAPSE. Dre's beats lurk dark-thumping sinister while Em unleashes nightmare dreamscapes of murder, mayhem, and Britney-Spearsacide. One target who gets off surprisingly lightly this time around is his mother (a topic even Em admits in his introduction of which the world is probably sick); "My Mom" boasts softer, bouncier beats and a final line few hip-hop fans would ever expect to hear coming out of his mouth.

Coming on the heels of his number four Billboard Hot 100 single, "Birthday Sex," rising R&B star Jeremih releases his eponymous full-length album. A well-crafted set of modern urban soul, the set is produced by Mick Schultz and, surprising for an emerging artist in the '00s, does not feature any guest spots, allowing Jeremih's singing and songwriting prowess to take center stage.
There's more to Jeremih's debut album than "Birthday Sex," a bedroom ballad that became a major summertime crossover hit a la J. Holiday's "Bed." Outside of the startlingly direct delivery of its title and the stuttering effect that comes into play whenever Jeremih sings lines like "I know you want to cry-y-y out" and "Girl you know I-I-I"--a twist on the-Dream's oft-deployed stammer--"Birthday Sex" is a basic but ingratiating slow jam built over Mick Schultz's gently rocking lullaby beat, rather "Bed"-like. Schultz, who met the singer in college, produces the whole album. Despite being a mere upstart who takes many cues from the hottest pop-savvy R&B producers running, including Tricky Stewart, Carlos McKinney, Danja, and Timbaland, he supplies his partner with a set of backdrops that covers all the bases, from low-slung Southern trunk rattlers to glossy Euro-flavored pop. Jeremih's charmingly sly voice, somewhere between One Twelve's Slim and a young Raphael Saadiq, is hard to not like, especially when he tempers his cockiness with a little sensitivity--best heard in "Break Up to Make Up," the song that also bears the album's sharpest hooks.

Ginuwine's first album in three and a half years (the 2007 release I APOLOGIZE was unauthorized), A MAN'S THOUGHTS is his first release away from the Epic family. It's a decent set of modern R&B, dominated by seductive slow jams, that stimulates a little more often than it fades into the background. It does take a serious tone on a handful of songs dealing with a wider range of relationship issues than lust, heartache, and devotion: "Show Me the Way," with an anthem-like chorus, is a guard-dropped plea for direction, while on "Last Chance," the singer has never sounded more desperate as he attempts to rescue a relationship. On the lighter side, Ginuwine reconnects with Timbaland on "Get Involved," where the producer and Missy Elliott almost wipe him out of the picture in competitive banter.

Before her debut IN A PERFECT WORLD. appeared in 2009, Keri Hilson had already established an impressive track record in the industry, writing high-charting hits for Mary J. Blige, Timbaland, and Britney Spears, among others, and contributing her unique, elastic voice on various high-profile cameos. IN A PERFECT WORLD. lives up to its promise by giving her singing and writing plenty of room to stretch out. Club bangers like "Turnin' Me On" and "Get Your Money Up" are Hilson's specialty, but she's no slouch on slow-burn ballads and seductive urban contemporary numbers either. Top-flight production from Timbaland, Danja, and Polow da Don provides the lush sonic backdrop against which Hilson's talents unfurl.

Bed-Stuy rapper Maino spent nearly a decade behind bars before he launched his rap career. Thanks to numerous appearances on mixtapes, the "Maino Is the Future" tagline started appearing about 2004, just one year after his release. Switching labels, scrapping a finished album, and not releasing his official debut for five years brought this "future" into doubt, but it was really just a case of the stars aligning because IF TOMORROW COMES is a killer way to start a career. Over an especially good Swizz Beatz production, he identifies himself as different right from the start, declaring it's better to give than receive on the opening "Million Bucks." Feeling good about the success of others isn't common in gangster rap, but Maino is hardcore all the way and will later offer "I contemplate, they ain't never hear you screams with a pillow to your face" on "Kill You." IF TOMORROW COMES believably lives in both of these worlds because it is a concept album that follows Maino from crack addict parents to prison and on to parole where he's determined not to fail. He speaks to the soul-crushing joylessness of prison and what an important role pride plays in his life, and how much that differs from the average rapper's ide-a of respect. Lighter moments appear along the way with the infectious and snide "Hi Hater" and the T-Pain-produced victory number "All the Above" keeping the album from becoming too heavy. After all that time in prison, Maino has few answers but he has a plan, and it happens to be a righteous plan.

This album's title is a tribute to Prince Be's newborn son, Christian, through whom Be has experienced his own rebirth. DEAR CHRISTIAN...is an exploration of new territory for a group pegged as the hippies of hip-hop only a few short years before. Nevertheless, PM Dawn put together an album that is more John Lennon (or at least early Lenny Kravitz) than Puff Daddy or LL Cool J. Tracks like "Being So Not For You," "If I Could Be Your Star" and "Screaming At Me" show the depth in Prine Be's songwriting as well as the group's direct focus on fresh-sounding material.
More pop/R&B than hip-hop, DEAR CHRISTIAN is an album that fights specific genre classification due to the band's many influences. Blues, pop, soul, rock and the sounds of Marvin Gaye and John Lennon reverberate throughout the album's thirteen tracks.

Though they came out of the late-'80s grunge crowd, Ohio's Afghan Whigs always seemed a little too smart for rehashed '70s metal cliches. Throughout their career, they've moved further and further away from their hard-rock roots, buoyed by the anguished lyrics of frontman Greg Dulli (who had enough vocal presence to sing Lennon's parts in the dramatized Beatles film Backbeat). Over a sonic landscape that mixes '70s R&B with seductive, timeless rock & roll hooks, Dulli spins one dysfunctional passion play after another, dredging up the ugly emotions that most people prefer to keep hidden. Dulli uses them as fuel for his artistic fire, reveling in the catharsis and connecting with those who've been there (even if they'd rather not admit it). Sax and keyboards provide a welcome variety of tone to what's still ultimately a guitar-based rock record (albeit one that shuns cliche like a chronic ailment).
