| | Brian Mcknight Evolution Of A Man CD (2009)
Percy Sledge
$14.04 Brian McKnight's lone set of non-Christmas material for Warner Bros., 2006's TEN, peaked exactly where his previous six proper albums topped out (within the Top Five of Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart), yet he finds himself on E1 (formerly Koch) for EVOLUTION OF A MAN. Though he has written and produced plenty of his own material in the past, he did it all on this one, and presumably provided much of its instrumentation. It's a set that is predominantly slow, sparse, and intimate. Most of the album's last two-thirds offers familiar McKnight fare -- sensitive, soothing backdrops that are at least comforting when not uplifting. Earlier on, as well as in a couple instances deeper into the album, McKnight takes some risks with tracks that contain little more than pattering percussion and twinkling keyboards; here, the sonics are more memorable than the songs, and not much of the album as a whole holds up to repeated listening. Some of McKnight's devoted fanbase will find the album rather fascinating since it's a change of pace, more a collection of loose sketches than a highly polished set.

| | Drake So Far Gone CD (2009)
Percy Sledge
$9.15 No doubt about it, Drake blew up big time in 2009. The one-time TV actor (from DEGRASSI HIGH: THE NEXT GENERATION) hooked up with Lil Wayne a couple years previously, worked the mixtape and collabo circuit for a spell and then suddenly hit with the song "Best I Ever Had." The song was taken from the SO FAR GONE mixtape and became the top summer jam of 2009. After a ferocious bidding war, Drake ended up signing with Universal Motown (while keeping his affiliation with Weezy's Young Money and Cash Money intact) and was officially introduced via the SO FAR GONE EP. The release included seven tracks from the mixtape and gave undeniable proof that the hype and noise surrounding the rapper were all justified. The productions (courtesy of members of Drake's Toronto-based crew) are nuanced and powerful, the hooks are huge and Drake has lyrical skills and vocal flow that make him one of the best young spitters on the scene. When an artist is as talked about and hyped as Drake was in 2009, it's easy to write them off as an industry creation or some kind of fluke. SO FAR GONE shows that Drake is for real and works as a tantalizing teaser for his first full-length record.

| | P M Dawn Dearest Christian, I'm So Sorry For Bringing You Here. Love, Dad CD (Import)
$17.09 Principally recorded at Bliss Studios, Jersey City, New Jersey; Soundtracks, New York, New York; Slamm Studios, Los Angeles, California.
This album's title is a tribute to Prince Be's newborn son, Christian, through whom Be has experienced his own rebirth. DEAR CHRISTIAN...is an exploration of new territory for a group pegged as the hippies of hip-hop only a few short years before. Nevertheless, PM Dawn put together an album that is more John Lennon (or at least early Lenny Kravitz) than Puff Daddy or LL Cool J. Tracks like "Being So Not For You," "If I Could Be Your Star" and "Screaming At Me" show the depth in Prine Be's songwriting as well as the group's direct focus on fresh-sounding material.
More pop/R&B than hip-hop, DEAR CHRISTIAN is an album that fights specific genre classification due to the band's many influences. Blues, pop, soul, rock and the sounds of Marvin Gaye and John Lennon reverberate throughout the album's thirteen tracks.
Additional Tracks
Engineers: Mike Fossenkemper, P.M. Dawn.
P.M. Dawn includes: Alttrel Cordes (synthesizers, programming).
Additional personnel: Cameron Greider (guitar, Fender Rhodes, bass); Clark Anderson (piano, keyboards, background vocals); Henry Hey (piano, keyboards); Etienne Lytle (keyboards); Artie Reynolds (bass); Tommy Brunjes (drums, percussion); Todd Snare (drums); J. Slamm, Lil'E (drum programming); Kaz Silver, Sophia Ramos, Zhana Saunders, Robbie Jenkins (background vocals).
