| | Don Ellis At Fillmore CDs (1970)
Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree CD music
$16.39 This is a crazy and consistently riotous two-disc set that features the Don Ellis Orchestra at its height. The 20-piece orchestra (with trumpeter Ellis doubling on drums along with a regular drummer and two percussionists) often used electronic devices (such as ring modulators) at the time to really distort its sound. When coupled with odd time signatures and such exuberant soloists as Ellis, trombonist Glenn Ferris, tenor saxophonist John Klemmer (showcased on the remarkable "Excursion II"), guitarist ...

Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree CD music

| | Betty Carter I Can't Help It CD (1961)
Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree music CDs
$10.65 The first half of I CAN'T HELP IT consists of tracks from Betty Carter's second record date, recorded in New York City in 1958 and originally released on Peacock Records. Highlights include the offbeat title tune, which is a Carter original and a lyrical proclamation of her individuality, as well as a poignant version of the standard ballad "Something Wonderful" arranged by Melba Liston.
The second half was recorded in New York City in 1960 with a big band orchestra. The big, playful production meshes surprisingly well with Carter's unique vocal stylings, and features such gems as an uptempo, partly scat-sung version of the classic standard "Remember," as well as a cooking Norman Mapp tune, ...

| | Victor Feldman Latinsville CD (1959)
Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree album
$10.69 Vibraphonist Victor Feldman's 1959 recording Latinsville found the British expatriate exploring various Latin rhythms in a decidedly West Coast style. Featuring an all-star group that included such cool school luminaries as trumpeter Conte Candoli and Frank Rosolino, Feldman also brought in Latin music pros including percussionists Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria, bassist Tony Reyes, and others. Selecting such popular songs of the day as "South of the Border," "Poinciana" and "Lady of Spain" -- most of which never originally specified a Latin-style treatment -- Feldman made explicit each songs implied Latin idiom. Although artists such as vibist Cal Tjader and Dizzy Gillespie had been producing Afro-Cuban and Brazilian inflected jazz for a few years, the cross-pollination didn't really catch on until the '60s. Consequently, Latinsville, while in no way as influential as say, Getz/Gilberto, is nonetheless a forgotten gem. ~ Matt Collar

Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree album
$14.79 Near the end of the old millennium, someone once rapped, "Being futuristic these days means being futuristic on your own terms," which is entirely fitting when said rapper records an album of solo piano instrumentals. (Perhaps less instructive is what said rapper went on to say: "Being futuristic ...
