| | Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music, Vols. 1-2 CD (1987)
Truth music CDs
$13.59 Originally released on Swallow (6011) in 1965 and Swallow (6019) in 1974. Includes French and English translations.
If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning.
Theirs is an entirely acoustic sound, based on the jangling rhythm of the guitar, the sprightly tinkling of the triangle, and two wailing fiddles, alternately melancholy and joyous. Dewey Balfa, the band's de facto leader is possessed of a classic Cajun vocal style; it's frequently impossible to tell whether he's lamenting or rejoicing. The Brothers' rough-hewn, earthy feel is so captivating that the listener is drawn fully in, regardless of ...

Truth songs
$15.05 Trivium brought the heavy music scene to its knees with the brilliance of 2005's ASCENDENCY. Aggressive touring helped them to build a rabid following and honed the band's already fierce chops. The progression of CRUSADE showcases a young group poised to inherit the coveted metal music crown from the very artists that inspired them to play. With the collaboration of co-producer and engineer Jason Suecof, the band pushes their thrashy verse/hooky chorus ...
| | Ravi Shankar West Meets East: The Historic Shankar/Menuhin Sessions CD (1967)
Truth album
$8.29 That a Western violinist should choose to pair with the illustrious Ravi Shankar is not in itself surprising. The violin was fully absorbed (and tuned much lower) by the Indian classical music establishment by the 19th century, and more recently has produced performers such as Dr. L. Subramaniam, Lalgudi Jayaraman, and the highly experimental L. Shankar. However, aside from being a highly accomplished set of recordings, the WEST MEETS EAST series--three Menuhin-Shankar collaborations that were later distilled into this one--elevated world music to new heights.
Menuhin had championed Indian music in the West for years before learning how to play it. His sensitivity to the material is demonstrated on "Swara Kakali," particularly during the tremendous duet that closes the track. On the evening raga, "Raga Piloo," Menuhin and Shankar glide in and out of each other's styles in a performance that is alternately Indian and Russian/Jewish, bound by their obvious empathy.
Recorded in England, The United States and ...

| | Viktor Mastoridis Pesnite Zvezdeni (Starry Songs) CD (2007)
Truth music CDs
$7.49 As much the local Jazz, Pop and Underground scene are thriving and interesting ones, the music of the Republic of Macedonia is best known for its Traditional songs and dances.Having been influenced and itself influencing the ethnic Balkan music, the folklore music of the Macedonian people (narodna muzika) has brought up wonderful melodies, dances and indeed magical moments to all those encountering it. The album Pesnite Zvezdeni (Starry Nights) presents a dozen of those so called "pearls" to the peoples with love and passion for the soulful, warm, ballad-like folk. Following the tradition of rural and urban (starogradska muzika) styles, it offers a beautifully recorded melange of Lyric, Epic, Labour and Patriotic songs. Building in the tradition of the old urban bands called "Calgii", it offers fresh, smooth arrangements which only add to, but never take of the beauty of the songs themselves. The music of the Balkans is known for its complex rhythms, and Macedonia is not an exception; but the sort of miracle and majesty of the ancient song-makers is that these rhythms are seamlessly interweaved into the musical mood, adding a dynamic dimension, rather than feeling odd. The 7/8 (3+2+2) rhythm for example, is called "pravoto" in Macedonia - the "straight" rhythm. It's the way those people feel, breathe and live the music. A much natural way. There are many distinctive folk instruments used in Macedonia, but Pesnite Zvezdeni uses the Tambura (tamboura) to express its often lyrical mind-set. Tamboura is a plucked string instrument with elegiac sound (more info here)Accompanied by Acoustic Guitars, Bass-guitar, Dajre (tambourine) ...
