America Mystica album
$19.10 Whereas Alice Cooper's first two studio albums, 1969's PRETTIES FOR YOU and 1970's EASY ACTION, tended more towards the trippy excesses of the hippie era, their next one, 1971's LOVE IT TO DEATH introduced the world to the heavy sound that Cooper would soon be taking to the top. With the invaluable production assistance of future Pink Floyd/Lou Reed cohort Bob Ezrin, LOVE IT TO DEATH proved Alice ...
| | Joe Walsh Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get CD (1973) Gold
America Mystica CD music
$19.10 "Rocky Mountain Way," the tune that opens Joe Walsh's sophomore release (and remains one of his best-known songs), is a textbook example of Walsh's strengths. The song is driven by a slinky hard rock groove that boasts crunchy, distorted guitars, barrelhouse piano, wiry solos, and a catchy, singalong chorus--proving Walsh's penchant for mixing rock elements and radio-ready accessibility with a sense of wit and fun. The rest of SMOKER YOU DRINK, PLAYER YOU GET follows suit, with the mid-tempo rock ballad "Bookends," the bouncy, Latin-tinged "Happy ...
| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
America Mystica music CDs
$12.95 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant "Half of My Heart," the softly soulful "Perfectly Lonely." Here, Mayer is effortlessly seductive and somewhat irresistible, and it's easy to see why the ladies love cool John. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | The Very Best Of Enya CDs (2009) With DVD
America Mystica songs
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Catatonia Paper Scissors Stone CD (2001)
America Mystica album
$9.79 Post-grunge act Cataonia's fifth full length album, PAPER SCISSORS STONE, released in 2001, is a bittersweet, 14 song catalogue which includes "Imaginary Friend," "Fuel," and "Beautiful Loser."
For awhile there, Catatonia sounded novel and fresh in the middle of a British music scene warped on maudlin self-respect but, now that they've gone and suffered through their own euphemistically-tinged bouts of exhaustion and pop star rehabilitation, the rot has set in. With its sobered, Veruca Salt-style drift and gospel-orchestrated ill assessments, Paper Scissors Stone is, more than anything else, a warning against ever misunderstanding what it means to have most of the people like you only some of the time. In reality, there's nothing like chugging indie sung with the ferocity of a grown woman laying an egg to give a little polish to your record collection, but even the most committed fan should admit that there can be too much of an odd thing. Guitarist ...
| | Tracy Chapman Let It Rain CDs (2002) (Import) Bonus CD; United Kingdom
America Mystica CD music
$26.19 Tracey Chapman's sixth album continues her tradition of immaculately crafted, self-effacing, deceptively low-key songs that consistently get to the root of things. That the most commercial track here ("Say Hallelujah") is about a funeral speaks volumes about Chapman's songwriting approach. "The bucket is kicked/The body is gone" she sings prosaically; "Eternal rest for the weary/Mourners party tonight." It's a catchy song that manages to retain its optimism despite its mortal subject.
With LET IT RAIN Chapman seems to be settling in to an acceptance of her cult status after her initial success with "Fast Car" and the later "Give ...
