J.S. Bach's magnificent final composition is a work shrouded in mystery. The composer died before its completion, and the original manuscript lacks any indication of instrumentation, dynamics, or performance order, leaving open to conjecture Bach's ultimate intention. Some speculate that the massive work is a textbook or encyclopedia of fugues and canons, a treatise meant for pedagogical and academic purposes. Others contend that this masterpiece contains extramusical symbolism and hidden meaning which renders it more than a mere exercise in counterpoint, rather a work imbued with mysticism and spirituality. Regardless, it is an extraordinary achievement, stunning in how Bach conveyed technical complexities through some of the most sublime music imaginable. The Emerson String Quartet approaches the work with enthusiasm and a confidence born of virtuosity. The result is a compelling account, exuberant and vibrant yet technically polished. It's a performance that illuminates the richly woven textures and intricacies of this magnum opus by virtue of profound musicality and intelligence. The accompanying booklet includes a well-written, in-depth analysis of the work by Paul Epstein that provides valuable insight into the framework of the individual sections as well as the overall structure.

This disc was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Small Ensemble Performance."
Since 1974, Dallas-based Voices of Change has played a vital role in the musical life of the Southwest. Ensemble-in-Residence at Southern Methodist University's Meadow School of the Arts, it is the only professional chamber group in the region devoted to new music. This disc features Latin American composers and is dedicated to the memory of Mexican conductor Eduardo Mata, a former director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
The selection covers a variety of conventional modern styles. Robert Xavier Rodriguez' 'Les Niais Amoureux,' is a playful work which skillfully intertwines a Rameau keyboard piece with an original theme, while Roberto Sierra's 'Trio Tropical' contains references to Debussy and in its slow passages evokes Messiaen's 'Quartet for the End of Time.' Mario Davidovsky's 'Romancero' and Tania Leon's 'Pueblo Mulato' are both vigorously expressionistic song sets while Mario Lavista's 'Quotations' weaves fleeting phrases from a handful of sources into a stark atonal framework. All of these are first recordings and, as such, invaluable.
