| | Best Of Sade CD (1994)
Bass Temperature
$9.75 Digitally remastered by Tom Coyne (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Nigerian vocalist Sade Adu has carved out a cosmpolitan niche for herself over the past decade, gathering together elements of cool jazz, samba, reggae, funk and pop all under the pastoral umbrella of her suede-and-velvet voice. A pop stylist with a musical universe all her own, Sade has endured and matured over the past decade, seemingly unaffected by changes in taste and fashion--a movement unto herself.
As her most recent single (Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone To Love" from the PHILADELPHIA soundtrack) illustrates, Sade's coy caressing voice speaks more of commitment and trust, of relationships in flux ("Nothing Can Come Between Us") than of the heat of the moment: from the the coy duplicity of "Smooth Operator" to the positive reinforcement of "The Sweetest Taboo" and the sweet ambiguities of "Love Is Stronger Than Pride."
Outside of Sade's mentholated vocals, it is the serene, understated quality of her arrangements that lend THE BEST OF SADE its classic touch of elegance. Delicate washes of percussion and acoustic guitar, the coiled intensity of Stewart Matthewman's ...
| | Trey Songz Ready CD (2009)
Bass Temperature
$15.65 Nobody could accuse R&B torch singer Trey Songz of ADD. From the intro of his third record, READY, Trey is focused on seduction, sometimes sensual to the level of sex-crazed, sometimes vulnerable, but always swaggering. Songs like "I Invented Sex" and "Neighbors Know My Name" are as straightforward ...

One of the highlights of THE BODYGUARD soundtrack is how the film's female lead, Whitney Houston, brings her gospel roots front and center on the half dozen tracks which feature her soaring vocals. These churchy musical overtones are apparent throughout "Jesus Loves Me!" and on her unaccompanied intro to the hit "I Will Always Love You" ...

| | Kruder & Dorfmeister K&D Sessions CDs (1998) (Import) Germany
Bass Temperature
$13.69 Viennese beatsmiths Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister prove themselves to be DJs with a difference on this stellar double-disc set. Instead of simply stringing together favorite tunes of the moment, K&D assemble something much more permanent and notable by gathering their own remixes for both well-known artists (Depeche Mode, Bone Thugs 'N Harmony, Roni Size, Bomb The Bass) and European cult acts (Rainer Trnby Trio, Count Basic, Knowtoryous, Sofa Surfers, Mama Oliver). The unifying thread can be called the K&D sound--a playfully off-beat and bass-heavy funk so singular that it instantly assimilates any piece ...

| | Robert Plant Dreamland CD (2002) (Import) Bonus Track; Australia
Bass Temperature
$11.99 While there's nothing particularly retro about the proceedings on DREAMLAND, Robert Plant's first solo album of the 21st century finds him reaching back to his roots. This entails not so much a return to the turbo-blues bombast of Led Zeppelin, but a look even further back to the country blues that inspired the young, pre-Zep Plant, and to the kind of psych-folk troubadours whose magic filled the air when "Stairway to Heaven" was just a gleam in Jimmy Page's eye.
Towards this end, Plant deconstructs/reconstructs old blues tunes such as "Fixin' To Die" and "Win My Train Fare Home" as well as tackling material by the likes of Tim Buckley (the shimmering "Song to the Siren," Skip Spence (the Moby Grape-era "Skip's Song"), and Bob Dylan (a Middle Eastern-tinged take on "One More Cup of Coffee"). Though most of Plant's solo career has frankly not been rife with memorable songs, he comes up with a number of impressive original tunes here, showing that he knows how to keep up with the present and the future as well as the past.
Resurrecting a vintage selection of folk, blues and rock songs, Robert transforms them into his own amazing style ...
| | N E R D In Search Of... CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Bass Temperature
$12.49 Additional personnel includes: Kelis (vocals); Lee Harvey, Vita, Kelis, Pusha T, Malice (rap vocals).
Writing and producing team The Neptunes have worked with everyone from Jay Z to Britney Spears. N.E.R.D. emerges as their side-project and first stab at performing. Behind the mike, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo throw forth an interesting blend of several musical genres, creating a style all their own. N.E.R.D.'S sound is just as eclectic as The Neptune's clientele, fusing rock, hip-hop, electronica, and R&B. N.E.R.D. stands for No One Ever Really Dies, and refers to the infinite spirit and energy that exists in every living thing. This debut album, which features guest performances by Kelis and many others, definitely reflects that energy. The track list includes ...
