This 1991 followup to 1987's successful CANCIONES DE MI PADRE continues Linda Ronstadt's innovative musical exploration of her roots. Once again, producer and arranger Ruben Fuentes is on hand to provide authentic orchestral accompaniment to classic Mexican songs handpicked by Linda and her brothers, who sing together as a trio on several tracks. The orchestra is also bit smaller this time, which perhaps accounts for Ronstadt's greater confidence in presenting this delightful material. What strikes the listener again is how different Ronstadt sounds performing this material. She swoops and sways and twists her syllables like a native, while manifesting a highly expressive sob never heard when she sings in English.

Deepak Chopra's album features the voices of Madonna, Demi Moore, Martin Sheen, and other stars, providing the project with instant allure, while bringing in a little street cred via civil rights activist Rosa Parks and Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman. Chopra would have been wise to hand over his own readings to the other performers, but overall, the album makes a good introduction to these timeless 13th century verses, and the accompanying music is danceable in its own right.

Kevin Hufnagel has been playing the guitar for 20 years and is perhaps best known for his work in progressive instrumental rock band Dysrhythmia (Relapse Records) and guitar-as-wall-of-sound duo Byla. Kevin's first full-length solo recording 'Songs for the Disappeared', released on his own Nightfloat Recordings imprint, is an album which seeks to unify eclectic and exploratory uses of the acoustic guitar into a cohesive and gripping whole.
