Any band that names itself with a pun based on the name of a font has automatic geek credibility. Cleveland noise rockers Times New Viking maintain that outside-hipster status with a defiance that threatens to turn into deliberate antipathy for any audience beyond the most committed lo-fi fetishists. The Paisley Reich is a forbiddingly noisy affair even by Cleveland avant-punk standards, sounding like it was recorded on a '70s-vintage cassette recorder in a concrete basement with a single microphone, this is a trebly blur of bratty-whiny vocals, feedback-laden guitar shards, needling synth stabs and lots and lots of cymbals. There are probably also drums, and possibly even bass, but the near-total lack of bottom end makes those instruments theoretical at best. Sounds like an artsy drag, right? Well, perversely, underneath all that noise and tape hiss is a load of punchy, catchy punk-pop songs with unexpectedly solid hooks and catchy tunes. There are a few pointless duds -- the untitled track just before "Bad Looks" is just 12 seconds' worth of amplified fret buzz -- but even the 56-second "Allegory Gets Me Hot" lives up to its excellent title with a sound partway between X-Ray Spex and early Guided by Voices. Once the listener makes it past the presentation, Paisley Reich is a highly entertaining listen. ~ Stewart Mason

Paisley Reich album
$11.59 The original LP release of HIGH TREASON came with a complimentary pack of American Flag rolling paper.
Despite the lip-service paid to bebop and modal jazz -- particularly the playing of legends such as John Coltrane and Miles Davis -- by the late-'60s countercultural scene, few of its rock bands actually attempted to translate the interest into music. The sole album from High Treason, however, was steeped in the genre, thanks in large part to leader and schooled keyboard whiz (check the Bach-like Baroque progressions of "Circadian Rhythm") Edgar Koshatka. High Treason marries extensive jazz interplay with a darkly atmospheric ...
| | Cheryl Wheeler Different Stripe CD (2003)
Paisley Reich CD music
$14.35 After a short stint at Capital in the late '80s, singer/songwriter Cheryl Wheeler found a more permanent home at Philo, where she recorded albums like Driving Home (1993) and Mrs. Pinocci's Guitar (1995). Different Stripe offers a lengthy retrospective of her impressive musical career, and although it has been released by Philo, it contains several selections from her work with Capitol. Wheeler is an introspective songwriter with a contemporary folk sensibility. On "Moonlight and Roses" she poetically describes the end of a relationship, adding poignantly, "There's nothin' you'd ask me that I wouldn't try/Please don't let this love go by." "Gandhi/Buddha" takes a more contemplative turn as she imagines that she must have accomplished great deeds in a former life to deserve true love. Wheeler is also a master of description, using details of weather and the seasons to reflect a particular mood. The picturesque "When Fall Comes to New England" captures the subtle changes of cooler nights, geese flying south, and squash ripening on the vine. "75 Septembers" considers a grandmother and the tremendous changes that occurred during her lifetime. "Are you more amazed at how things change, or how they stay the same?," ...
| | David Mead Indiana CD (2004) Bonus Track; Japan
Paisley Reich music CDs
$36.09 Following a pair of terrific records filled with pop songwriting of the highest order, David Mead and RCA parted ways, leaving him without a label to release the completed Wherever You Are (produced by Stephen Hague). The layoff that ensued (three years between albums) led to a return to his childhood home of Nashville, a marriage, and the recording and release of Indiana, placing Wherever You Are on hold. Co-produced by Mead and cellist David Henry, Indiana, with its quiet, gentle tone and sense of transition, seems to be his most personal work to date. The acoustic guitars and strings that are at the center of the record's sound are the perfect backdrop for songs such as the weary and reflective "Nashville," the distant solitude of the title track, and the frayed hope of "Queensboro Bridge." And while the material here can have the feel of adult contemporary singer/songwriter fare, the depth of Mead's writing, both lyrically and melodically, steers it clear of any of the banalities that can creep into the genre. He never goes for cheap emotion or the obvious melodic turn, which is why some of the best moments here are the ones that seep in only after a few spins. Indiana may lack the immediate hookiness that made The Luxury of Time and Mine and Yours so irresistible, but it's every bit as ...

| | Glenna Garramone Seasky-Starsong CD (2008)
Paisley Reich CD music
$25.29 "I sat mesmerized by the magic of her lyrical honesty. To put it into perspective, and I'm not exaggerating, think Tori Amos, or Leonard Cohen. The authenticity shines through..." - Matthew Harrison, Ottawa XPress"Raw, emotional and utterly captivating..." - John Threlfall, Monday MagazineOn her latest release, Seasky-Starsong, Glenna Garramone's unmistakable voice pilots you through worldscapes populated by octopi, bull kelp, Saints, and a French seductress. In the way that Kim Barlow and Kim Beggs have captured the spirit of the Yukon in song, Glenna has embraced the West Coast in all of its imagery and philosophies. Seasky-Starsong offers the polish of a studio album with everything listeners have come to expect from Glenna Garramone: poetic lyrics, sophisticated arrangements, and a fearless musical vision. While there is a touch of whimsy to some of the melodies, particularly when she's at the piano as on Wake Up Smiling, Empty Room, and Ladoo Deep (bringing to mind Tori Amos and Veda Hille), Glenna’s lyrics reveal a deep understanding about human connections. “Happiness can be so subtle / as elusive as a deep breath.” She recalls her time in Montréal on St. St. St., and French lyrics surface almost unnoticed on Anemone and K-I-S-S Me. Co-produced by Wynn Gogol (accordion, banjo, tele lap slide, synth) and Corwin Fox (electric bass, guitars, backup vocals) in Victoria, B.C, Seasky-Starsong also features Jordy Walker (Kim Barlow) on drums. Special guests include Oliver Rueben Swain (Outlaw Social) on stand up bass and Christina Zaenker (Joey Only Band, Yael Wand) on cello. Together they are a fountain of talent, their contributions bubble and flow, never drowning the true star of the album: Glenna, her acoustic guitar, her piano, her words, and that voice.Classically trained as a singer and pianist from the age of five, Glenna released her first album, Opus, when she was just seventeen. Profoundly affected by the soul of Diana Ross, the lyrics of Leonard Cohen, and the boldness of both Tori Amos and Ani Difranco, Glenna set out to create songs that listeners could connect with. And they did. Opus charted in the Top Ten at campus radio stations in the Ottawa ...
