Any band that names itself with a pun based on the name of a font has automatic geek credibility. Cleveland noise rockers Times New Viking maintain that outside-hipster status with a defiance that threatens to turn into deliberate antipathy for any audience beyond the most committed lo-fi fetishists. The Paisley Reich is a forbiddingly noisy affair even by Cleveland avant-punk standards, sounding like it was recorded on a '70s-vintage cassette recorder in a concrete basement with a single microphone, this is a trebly blur of bratty-whiny vocals, feedback-laden guitar shards, needling synth stabs and lots and lots of cymbals. There are probably also drums, and possibly even bass, but the near-total lack of bottom end makes those instruments theoretical at best. Sounds like an artsy drag, right? Well, perversely, underneath all that noise and tape hiss is a load of punchy, catchy punk-pop songs with unexpectedly solid hooks and catchy tunes. There are a few pointless duds -- the untitled track just before "Bad Looks" is just 12 seconds' worth of amplified fret buzz -- but even the 56-second "Allegory Gets Me Hot" lives up to its excellent title with a sound partway between X-Ray Spex and early Guided by Voices. Once the listener makes it past the presentation, Paisley Reich is a highly entertaining listen. ~ Stewart Mason

After a short stint at Capital in the late '80s, singer/songwriter Cheryl Wheeler found a more permanent home at Philo, where she recorded albums like Driving Home (1993) and Mrs. Pinocci's Guitar (1995). Different Stripe offers a lengthy retrospective of her impressive musical career, and although it has been released by Philo, it contains several selections from her work with Capitol. Wheeler is an introspective songwriter with a contemporary folk sensibility. On "Moonlight and Roses" she poetically describes the end of a relationship, adding poignantly, "There's nothin' you'd ask me that I wouldn't try/Please don't let this love go by." "Gandhi/Buddha" takes a more contemplative turn as she imagines that she must have accomplished great deeds in a former life to deserve true love. Wheeler is also a master of description, using details of weather and the seasons to reflect a particular mood. The picturesque "When Fall Comes to New England" captures the subtle changes of cooler nights, geese flying south, and squash ripening on the vine. Following a pair of terrific records filled with pop songwriting of the highest order, David Mead and RCA parted ways, leaving him without a label to release the completed Wherever You Are (produced by Stephen Hague). The layoff that ensued (three years between albums) led to a return to his childhood home of Nashville, a marriage, and the recording and release of Indiana, placing Wherever You Are on hold. Co-produced by Mead and cellist David Henry, Indiana, with its quiet, gentle tone and sense of transition, seems to be his most personal work to date. The acoustic guitars and strings that are at the center of the record's sound are the perfect backdrop for songs such as the weary and reflective "Nashville," the distant solitude of the title track, and the frayed hope of "Queensboro Bridge." And while the material here can have the feel of adult contemporary singer/songwriter fare, the depth of Mead's writing, both lyrically and melodically, steers it clear of any of the banalities that can creep into the genre.
