Daníel Agúst first made his name as a singer/songwriter in the electronica/trip-hop-oriented group Gus Gus, who had quite a bit of success in their native Iceland, Agúst writing or co-writing all of the singles that became hits in that country. It might come as somewhat of a surprise, then, that his debut album is not especially electronica-oriented, though it's conscientiously textured and layered. Instead, it leans toward chamber pop, with violin and cello often complementing Agúst's breathily sung, wispy singer/songwriter-like material. As a very rough approximation, at times it sounds like a singer/songwriter such as Nick Drake might have, had he been mated with early 21st century technology and trends. Agúst isn't the songwriter (or singer) Drake was, but these are still affectingly vulnerable ruminations with a sensitive wind-blown romanticism that avoid being overly pretentious or sentimental. The production weaves imaginative, if occasionally gratuitously busy, embellishments of bells and electronic washes/effects around the song-oriented cores, with input from Bix (noted for remixing some of Madonna and Beck's work). ~ Richie UnterbergerCMJ (p.42) - "[With] subtle, musique concrete rhythms and quite gorgeous string arrangements....In a word, cool." | | Barbarians Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl? CD (1965)
Swallowed A Star
$11.59 While the Barbarians live up to a lot of people's vision of the classic garage-band image, their album is disappointing and thin-sounding. The material, none of which was penned by the group, is average and doesn't even rock terribly hard. "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl" is here, but much of the rest of the songs are overdone standards ("House of the Rising Sun" is especially lame). "What the New Breed Say" is an OK anthem of rebellion, and "I'll Keep on Seeing You" a modestly touching ballad. But as eight of the 12 songs are covers and four tunes are supplied to them by songwriters not in the band, the album does not reflect much in the way of an original vision. The 2000 Sundazed reissue adds three important bonus tracks: "Moulty" and, at long last, both sides of their rare 1964 single on Joy, "Hey Little Bird"/"You've Got to Understand." "Hey Little Bird," the song they performed on their T.A.M.I. Show appearance, is easily their best track, although the studio version isn't as ferocious as their rendition on film. ~ Richie Unterberger

Swallowed A Star
$11.49 Debut CD Available for Pre-order April 18, 2006Like a character out of a country song, Allen Brown moved to Nashville from a tiny Texas town in an old Ford truck with a secondhand guitar and a sack full of songs, dreams, and family tradition.Brown is the third generation country artist in his family – his grandfather Arvil Pritchett played harmonica for Ernest Tubb on the Texas circuit for years. “Ernest Tubb wanted my grandfather to come to Nashville with him, but my mother was a baby at the time, so he decided to stay in Texas with his family. My grandfather went to his grave with that unanswered question of ‘what if’? I vowed to him that I would not live with the same unanswered question.†For Brown, the answer to that question was not an easy one. He faced three choices: join the Texas circuit of touring bands with the likes of Tommy Alverson and Rusty Weir, follow in the footsteps of many legends and unknowns before him and move to Nashville, or give up music altogether. With the support and encouragement of his family, Brown chose Nashville. It seems a natural choice for someone who has been singing since the age of five, playing guitar since 10, and singing in front of VFW and regional Opry crowds since 12. The biggest surprise is not that Brown came to Nashville, but that it took him several years and career choices –roughstock rider, rancher, real estate agent, Army National Guard tank gunner – to embrace his true calling.“For me, there is emotional and spiritual uplift in the power of a song. To walk out on stage and leave the crowd smiling at the end of the night is the ultimate. When I write a song, I write because there’s something I want to say and share with people.â€Influenced by country greats such as George Strait, Johnny Paycheck, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Keith Whitley and gifted with a charisma that draws in an audience, Brown’s songs pay tribute to country music’s roots while adding a modern flavor that can only be described as “Allen-tude.†His contagious onstage energy keeps the crowd involved through the last note of the night. Even the occasional gospel song becomes a sing-along without seeming irreverent or preachy, and a song about the importance of family makes a strong statement ...
