Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). DESIRE was the studio realization of the Rolling Thunder revue's sound. The musicians involved in this mid-'70s Dylan project were more than a backup band; they forged a distinctive musical vision, loose and swirling, the perfect aural equivalent of the traveling gypsy/carnival image they affected onstage. Drummer Howie Wyeth, who possessed an uncannily sympathetic ear for accompanying singer-songwriters, and violinist Scarlet Rivera, built their careers on the foundation of the Rolling Thunder band.
Many critics balked at Dylan's lyrical collaborations with Jacques Levy on this album, but their reservations were just glorified xenophobia. Levy's flowing, colloquial style suited Dylan's music and delivery perfectly, and the two produced several gems. "Isis" is an exotic tale of intrigue that turns out to be a unique love story. "Hurricane" breathlessly tells the true story of Ruben Carter, a boxer framed for murder and acquitted years after DESIRE's release. It still stands as one of Dylan's most exciting, emotional tunes.
If Blood on the Tracks was an unapologetically intimate affair, Desire is unwieldy and messy, the deliberate work of a collective. And while Bob Dylan directly addresses his crumbling relationship with his wife, Sara, on the final track, Desire is hardly as personal as its predecessor, finding Dylan returning to topical songwriting and folk tales for the core of the record. It's all over the map, as far as songwriting goes, and so is it musically, capturing Dylan at the beginning of the Rolling Thunder Revue era, which was more notable for its chaos than its music. And, so it's only fitting that Desire fits that description as well, as it careens between surging folk-rock, Mideastern dirges, skipping pop, and epic narratives. BioAt the age of ten, my dad handed me my first guitar. It was an old Gibson 6 string flattop with rivets in the back to hold the neck on. I took to it right away and wanted more. By the time my freshman high school year came around, I was well on my way. I started a band called Silent Rage and had my first real guitar, an Ibanez Roadster.We performed at school dances,street dances,parades and a few bars.After high school,I joined the Air Force and had lost touch with the music. In 1985, I teamed up with a drummer, Ron Roth, who was also stationed at Minot Air Force base in North Dakota. Our jointly formed band was called OZENROTH and we played a few gigs here and there,one of which we opened for Nixen Pupils as their second of three groups. I felt that this was not the direction I wanted to go because I was still performing cover tunes. I,again,had a break from music till 1992 when I met a guitarist/ keyboard player named Eric Olson. We quickly became friends and had very similar tastes in music. A couple of years or so later, we formed a band called Darkwolf with Thayne Wickam on bass and Dave Perrault on percussion. During my time spent with Darkwolf, I finally began writing my music. After performing for awhile, we all parted ways. In the late 1990s, I picked up my Ibanez Joe Satriani 600 series guitar and just started messing around and wrote the rhythm track for “In The Beginning”. Soon I was creating tunes to follow. I was coming up with titles of songs I hadn’t even written the music for yet and new that I was creating an epic tale through moods of music. I hit a major setback in 2001 when my computer crashed and I lost all my work. It took more than a year before I wanted to record again.
