If it was a reaction to California's eternal sunshine and plastic sheen that inspired Metallica and Megadeth to help create the dark, angst-filled extreme metal that became thrash, perhaps it was New York City's inherent toughness that caused Anthrax to inject a quirky worldview and sarcastic sense of humor into its own pioneering speed metal. Like NYC proto-punks the Dictators before them, Anthrax's uncompromising individuality may have cost them the kind of mainstream success later achieved by their contemporaries and followers, but it also endeared them to an unusually loyal hardcore fanbase. This loyalty extended across the Atlantic to England, as evidenced by the rapturous audience reception documented on CAUGHT IN A MOSH: BBC LIVE IN CONCERT, which features two British gigs from Anthrax's 1987 heyday. Both the Hammerstein and Donnington festival shows find the band in peak form, whipping the crowds into a frenzy with its high-energy chugga-chuggery and vocalist Joey Belladonna's Bruce Dickinson-like tenor. On classics such as the pounding, hardcore-influenced "I Am the Law" and the genre-defining political song "Indians" Anthrax plays it fast and snap-tight, stripping away metal's traditional over-the-top showiness in favor of pure, unadulterated heavy music with no excuses or flash. The effect of this then-still-relatively-new approach is positively electrifying, and a welcome reminder that Anthrax will forever stand as one of the most important bands in thrash.
Two CD set featuring a pair of blistering live performances by the kings of Thrash Metal. Disc One features a 12 song performance from the Hammersmith Odeon recorded in February of 1987. Disc Two features nine tracks recorded at the Donnington Festival six months later. Tracks include 'Amongst The Living', 'I Am The Law', 'God Save The Queen', 'Madhouse' and others. Island. 2007.

$12.69 "Accomplished and inventive, pianist Carlos Cuevas combines classical technique with a robust sense of drive and melody on Depiction. Cuevas' music gives as much attention to texture and feel as it does melody: If you can follow the chord progression and where "one" is, you'll get it." -John Ephland, DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE "Whether breaking bar lines or splicing together clever arrangements, Carlos' Depiction has a distinct voice and noteworthy depth." -Michael Gallant, KEYBOARD MAGAZINE "Pianist Carlos Cuevas' Depiction heralds a noteworthy up-and-comer. The compelling keyboardist is rooted in straight-ahead, but his eclectic writing navigates breathtaking left turns." -Jeff Potter, MODERN DRUMMER MAGAZINE "Junto a un trĂo muy compenetrado, Carlos Cuevas lanza al mercado Depiction. | | Xela Dead Sea CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Caught In A Mosh - BBC Live In Concert CD music
$9.65 Inspired by sources as varied as Goblin's scores for Dario Argento's gory classics to Wolf Eyes' unearthly electronic noise, Xela's The Dead Sea is a concept album about a sea voyage overtaken by zombies. Stories like this don't usually end well, and neither does this one; doom is telegraphed with every track, from "The Gate" -- which begins the album with droning strings that give off vibrations of dread like heat shimmer -- to the chilling finale, "Briefly Seen." Often, the album feels like a field recording of rusty chains, ill winds, and lost souls. Though The Dead Sea is far darker than Tangled Wool or For Frosty Mornings and Summer Nights, it shares Xela's attention to mood and sonic detail, teeming with writhing textures and percussion and haunting melodies that occasionally bob to the surface. Decaying sea shanties like "Creeping Flesh" and "A Floating Procession" would almost be jaunty, were it not for the unsettlingly deep basslines ...
