(4 Customer Reviews)
Along with Ne-Yo, urban contemporary singer Carl Thomas has been one of the few artists in the 2000s keeping the classic R&B flame alive. Passionate, sensual, and romantic, yet never lapsing into a retro-themed rehash of the past, SO MUCH BETTER, Thomas's third album, strikes just the right combination of slick, hip-hop-spiced grooves and vintage R&B soul.
The album is heavy on balladry, and standouts include a duet with Brandy titled "Something Bout You," and "Home," a moving ode to family life. As would be expected, love is a primary theme, and the lead-off single, "2 Pieces," in which Thomas opens his heart to his partner, is another album highlight. Sharp production and arrangements add to the overall luster of the disc, making SO MUCH BETTER a contemporary R&B offering that fans of the genre can sink their teeth into.
Personnel: Claude Kelly, Mikey Dan, Tanielle Johnson, Di Reed, Gordon Chambers, Troy Taylor (vocals); Erik Walls, Donald 'Pup Dawg' (guitar); Bobby Ross Avila, Big Jim Wright (keyboard).
Additional personnel: Dave Hollister, E-40, Lalah Hathaway, Baby Cham, Brandy.
Vibe (p.76) - "SO MUCH BETTER finds the velour-voiced Chi-Town vet back to balladeering....Thomas' sincerity -- implicit in the urgent surging of his voice -- can't be denied." So Much Better
$13.35 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's fierce, restless mood. But the disc's highlight is the utterly infectious single "Turn It Up," which boasts Scott Storch's distinctive ...

So Much Better
$7.69 Ginuwine's silky, R&B-inflected hip-hop is further smoothed out on 2005's BACK II DA BASICS. Unlike some of his previous releases, BACK II DA BASICS favors ballads and slow jams first and foremost. Sultry tunes like "When We Make Love" and "Want ...
| | Mary J Blige Breakthrough CD (2005)
So Much Better
$12.99 After her somewhat lukewarm 2003 release LOVE & LIFE, Mary J. Blige returns to her rightful place as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul with 2005's THE BREAKTHROUGH. Blige enlisted a host of guest producers to contribute tracks to THE BREAKTHROUGH, and the result is one of her strongest and most varied albums. As usual, the sound is a mixture of smooth, urban contemporary and hip-hop edge, but Blige nails it with tracks like the pulsing "Enough Cryin'" (with its rich, multi-layered vocals) and the breezy "Can't Hide From Luv" featuring a guest spot by Jay-Z.
The album's lead-off single, "Be Without You," a bittersweet slow jam, is representative of the album's themes, which focus on ...
