(4 Customer Reviews)
Along with Ne-Yo, urban contemporary singer Carl Thomas has been one of the few artists in the 2000s keeping the classic R&B flame alive. Passionate, sensual, and romantic, yet never lapsing into a retro-themed rehash of the past, SO MUCH BETTER, Thomas's third album, strikes just the right combination of slick, hip-hop-spiced grooves and vintage R&B soul.
The album is heavy on balladry, and standouts include a duet with Brandy titled "Something Bout You," and "Home," a moving ode to family life. As would be expected, love is a primary theme, and the lead-off single, "2 Pieces," in which Thomas opens his heart to his partner, is another album highlight. Sharp production and arrangements add to the overall luster of the disc, making SO MUCH BETTER a contemporary R&B offering that fans of the genre can sink their teeth into.
Personnel: Claude Kelly, Mikey Dan, Tanielle Johnson, Di Reed, Gordon Chambers, Troy Taylor (vocals); Erik Walls, Donald 'Pup Dawg' (guitar); James "Big Jim" Wright , Bobby Ross Avila (keyboards).
Additional personnel: Dave Hollister, E-40, Lalah Hathaway, Baby Cham, Brandy.
Vibe (p.76) - "SO MUCH BETTER finds the velour-voiced Chi-Town vet back to balladeering....Thomas' sincerity -- implicit in the urgent surging of his voice -- can't be denied." | | Mary J Blige Breakthrough CD (2005)
So Much Better music CDs
$11.05 The album's lead-off single, "Be Without You," a bittersweet slow jam, is representative of the album's themes, which focus on feelings of strength and weakness in love. But whether waxing romantic ("Can't Get Enough") or detailing the travails of the heart ("Baggage"), Blige lays down elastic R&B vocal lines that are second to none. Even a seemingly unlikely duet with Bono and U2 on "One" comes across beautifully, adding a new dimension to that familiar tune.
After her somewhat lukewarm 2003 release LOVE & LIFE, Mary J. Blige returns to her rightful place as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul with 2005's THE BREAKTHROUGH. Blige enlisted a host of guest producers to contribute ...

| | Enuff Z'Nuff Welcome To Blue Island CD (2002)
So Much Better music CDs
$11.39 With quite a few of the '80s-era glam-metal acts trying to come back with completely different approaches and styles come the 21st century, Chicago power pop vets Enuff Z'nuff continue to specialize in what they do best. And as evidenced by such latter-day releases as 2002's Welcome to Blue Island, they can still whip up a Beatlesque melody with no problem. The group continues to be led by the underrated songwriting duo of Donnie Vie and Chip Znuff, whose pop sensibilities are still keen on such standout tracks as "Good Times (Are Hard to Find)" and the upbeat ditty "Zentemental Journey" (which is preceded by a sitar-heavy Middle Eastern piece, "Z Overture," which is equal parts "Kashmir" and "Within You Without You"). For the hardcore fan, try to find the import version of Welcome to Blue ...
| | Santana Carnaval: Best Of CD (2009)
So Much Better songs
$17.45 Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to its combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana's distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and it enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade and into the early '70s. The musical ...
