Along with Ne-Yo, urban contemporary singer Carl Thomas has been one of the few artists in the 2000s keeping the classic R&B flame alive. Passionate, sensual, and romantic, yet never lapsing into a retro-themed rehash of the past, SO MUCH BETTER, Thomas's third album, strikes just the right combination of slick, hip-hop-spiced grooves and vintage R&B soul.
The album is heavy on balladry, and standouts include a duet with Brandy titled "Something Bout You," and "Home," a moving ode to family life. As would be expected, love is a primary theme, and the lead-off single, "2 Pieces," in which Thomas opens his heart to his partner, is another album highlight. Sharp production and arrangements add to the overall luster of the disc, making SO MUCH BETTER a contemporary R&B offering that fans of the genre can sink their teeth into.
Personnel: Claude Kelly, Mikey Dan, Tanielle Johnson, Di Reed, Gordon Chambers, Troy Taylor (vocals); Erik Walls, Donald 'Pup Dawg' (guitar); James "Big Jim" Wright , Bobby Ross Avila (keyboards).
Additional personnel: Dave Hollister, E-40, Lalah Hathaway, Baby Cham, Brandy.
Vibe (p.76) - "SO MUCH BETTER finds the velour-voiced Chi-Town vet back to balladeering....Thomas' sincerity -- implicit in the urgent surging of his voice -- can't be denied."
