On its second studio album, TONES OF TOWN, the Sunderland, England-based trio Field Music presents a lively set of spiky, pop-savvy indie rock. Like fellow local boys the Futureheads (who once counted Field Music drummer Peter Brewis as a member), the group tempers harmony and hooks with tight rhythms and angular arrangements, as best revealed on the dynamic opener "Give It Lose It Take It."
Composers: Peter Brewis; David Brewis.
Field Music: Peter Brewis, David Brewis, Andrew Moore (unknown instrument).
Personnel: Emma Fisk, Emma Fisk (violin); Peter Richardson, Peter Richardson (cello); Peter Gotton, Graeme Hopper (vibraphone); Rachael Davis (violin).
Recording information: Eight Music Studio, Sunderland, Tyne and Ware, England.Entertainment Weekly (p.98) - "Drumbeats, bass lines, and proggy keyboard squiggles interlock like gears while harmonies attack with the frequency of an advanced round of whack-a-mole." -- Grade: B+ Uncut (p.76) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "TOT plays to their new strengths, augmenting tricky prettiness with bold vigour." CMJ (p.36) - "Field Music generally eschews jerky, dance-punk rhythms in favor of lushness and almost melancholic '70s soft rock." Q (Magazine) (p.74) - Ranked #40 in Q's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2007" -- "[E]very bit as compelling as their forebears XTC and Elvis Costello." Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[C]onstantly surprising music....This is pop that's clever enough to ensure you're never too far away from a snatch of transfiguring melody or liquid vocal deliciousness." Tones Of Town songs
$8.85 As wryly noted on LCD Soundsystem's debut 2002 single, "Losing My Edge," in the underground music arms race, aging hipsters are losing ground against young upstarts who are (perhaps) unaware of their own influences. And if influences are the stuff with which post-millennial musicians are made, Murphy has trumped us all. Touching on reference points ranging from disco, krautrock, Bowie, house, and post-punk, to singer-songwriter types, SOUND OF SILVER is a veritable catalog of left-field cool. Leading off with the slow-boil, hypnotic opener, "Get Innocuous"--which sounds a bit like a reprise of "Losing My Edge" crossed with Kraftwerk's "The Robots"--the album moves from dance-floor stormers to plaintive piano numbers without batting an eye. On "North American Scum," Murphy lampoons the often mistaken idea that LCD Soundsystem is a U.K. act; ...

$11.39 In 1977 punk rock was hardly the only game in town. In addition to pub-rock, the remnants of glam and the lingering, aging hippies who still tenuously held onto the charts, there was also a small group of revivalists dedicated to reviving the fashion and music of the early-'60s mod scene. Chief among these young dandies was the most creative and consistent group of the lot, the Jam. Led by guitar hero/boy genius Paul Weller, the Jam took the R&B influences of bands like (early Who incarnation) the High Numbers, added punk rock's manic energy, and produced an energetic-yet-raw debut album (IN THE CITY) that hinted at great things to come.
By the time the second album THIS IS THE MODERN WORLD rolled around the Jam had its formula down pat. ...
| | Jaki Byard Last From Lennie's CD (2003)
Tones Of Town album
$12.35 There's a good and bad side of releasing old material that's been buried in a record label's vault or someone's attic. If the material's solid, say a live date from an artist's prime, then it's a Godsend. If the material is weak, or repeats earlier releases in a weaker form, it does a disservice to the artist. Luckily for fans of pianist Jaki Byard, the quartet recordings on Last From Lennie's are bursting with creative energy. Taped on April 14, 1965, Byard is joined by saxophonist Joe Farrell, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Alan Dawson for an adventurous live set. With a couple exceptions -- "After You've Gone/Strolling Along," and ...

Tones Of Town songs
$27.79 Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe is better known as four-fifths of Fragile-era Yes. Jon Anderson left the Trevor Rabin version of Yes and joined his old mates for the Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe album in 1989. In the Big Dream: A Video Compilation features three music videos and a live version of the Fragile classic "Heart of the Sunrise" recorded September 9, 1989, at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. The most interesting part of this video is the behind the scenes and interview footage of ABWH at work and at play in both London and Montserrat. "Brother of Mine" is the best song on the album, but the video is marred by the silly outdoor sequences featuring dancers painted up like a bizarre cross between Native Americans and Kiss. The performance footage features quick edits in which the painted faces of the dancers dissolve into the similarly painted faces of ABWH. (Yikes!) It should be noted that "Brother of Mine" was co-directed by renowned album cover artists Storm Thorgerson (known for his Pink Floyd sleeves) and Roger Dean (known for his sci-fi landscapes gracing Yes and ABWH albums). "Order of the Universe" and "Quartet (I'm Alive)" are the other two standard videos. ...
