In 1984, with Led Zeppelin no longer a going concern, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page found themselves with time on their hands. The result was THE HONEYDRIPPERS, a five-song mini album of old R&B covers featuring backing by Jeff Beck, ex-Stray ... Full DescriptionCat Brian Setzer, and Chic bassist Nile Rogers. The name was lifted from jump blues stalwart Joe Liggins, whose "The Honeydripper" was a big hit in 1945.
A one-off studio project (the Volume 1 tag has turned out to be a bit of a tease) THE HONEYDRIPPERS delivers a hit single in the atmospheric version of Phil Phillips' "Sea of Love." Also noteworthy here are faithful recreations of standards by Ray Charles ("I Got a Woman") and Roy Brown ("Good Rockin' at Midnight"). This is basically slight stuff (and with a running time of 18 minutes, it's over before you know it) but the old lemon squeezers are definitely having a heartfelt, infectious good time.
The Honey Drippers include: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Brian Setzer (guitar); Paul Schaffer (keyboards); Tony Thompson (drums).
Producers: Nugetre, The Fabulous Brill Brothers.

DECEMBER'S CHILDREN marked a crucial point in the Stones' development. The band was beginning to move away from its blues/R&B roots toward something more uniquely its own. Certainly those roots were far from absent in the songs composed for this album, and the Stones still cover their share of the masters here (Chuck Berry, Arthur Alexander, Hank Snow), but something new was afoot.
The aching ballad "As Tears Go By," complete with baroque orchestration, heralded a new direction in the Stones' songwriting. Similarly, the folk-rockish strains of "The Singer Not The Song" hint at previously uncharted directions. Perhaps the most crucial track here is "Get Off My Cloud, ...

1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The ...

ELO was big enough by 1974 that some people actually suggested that ELDORADO featured Satanic backward-masking. Of course, the idea was ludicrous; but the band playfully responded by adding a backward message to "Fire on High," the opening instrumental on 1975's FACE THE MUSIC.
Besides "Fire on High," which was used as background music for countless television programs in the '70s, this album's eight lengthy tracks include two enormous hits, "Evil Woman" and the McCartneyesque ballad "Strange Magic." Decades later, these two tracks are still in constant rotation on classic-rock radio around the world. Those three songs defined the new sound of ELO. Gone were the elaborate, classically styled overtures, in favor ...
| | Electric Light Orchestra On The Third Day CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Expanded Edition
Volume One album
$9.29 In some ways, 1973's ON THE THIRD DAY is the first "true" ELO album. Though co-founder Roy Wood had left the band to form the more experimental Wizzard after the first album, his influence was still all over 1972's ELO II, especially on the orchestrated cover of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven." ON THE THIRD DAY, however, is pure Jeff Lynne, the first album completely devoted to his soon-to-be enormously successful blend of psychedelic-era Beatles and 19th-century classical music. The pristinely recorded results are ultra-melodic and incredibly lush, with ballads like "Bluebird Is Dead" and rockers like the hits "Showdown" and "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle." ...
