This follow-up to the Frames' acclaimed 2004 Anti- debut, BURN THE MAPS, finds the acclaimed Irish rock band working in the same widescreen scope as on that album, with songs ebbing and flowing with crashing waves of guitar lines and the fascinatingly emotive vocals of frontman Glen Hansard. Many of the tunes on THE COST unwind slowly, particularly the mesmerizing opener, "Song for Someone." There is always something unpredictable at play, though, as on "Rise," which moves from a delicate, folk-like mood to a brief, intense furor, and "True," a lilting ballad lined with scattered shards of feedback. Though many Frames fans might think of BURN THE MAPS as impossible to top, THE COST easily rivals its predecessor and stands as a true accomplishment for the band. Cost
$6.79 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." VH1 PRESENTS THE CORRS LIVE IN DUBLIN is a fine mix of the band's greatest ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Cost
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety ...

| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
Cost
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical peaks, seemingly overcome with emotion as his wavering voice, which often recalls Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano, veers almost, but not quite, out of control. Oberst's eccentric vocal delivery makes his pairings here with ever-graceful harmony singer Emmylou Harris intriguing, particularly on the rambling shuffle of "Another Travellin' Song." Although Oberst manages to work up plenty of energy on some tracks, the quieter tunes, including ...
| | Frames Burn The Maps CD (2005)
Cost
$11.35 One of Ireland's most accomplished musical exports, the Frames built a fan base at home and abroad with tireless touring and passionate albums such as 1996's FITZCARRALDO and 2001's FOR THE BIRDS. BURN THE MAPS, the Frames' 2005 debut for the Anti label, is arguably their most focused and polished effort to date. The band's simmering intensity, folk-rock leanings, and sometimes explosive, dynamic rock (which can rival Radiohead and U2 in its epic sweep) are brought to the perfect synthesis here.
The focus of the group is vocalist Glen Hansard, whose approach ranges from a breathy whisper to a falsetto coo to a full-blown wrenching wail. Violinist Colm Mac Con Iomaire adds brilliantly chosen textures to the songs, lending ...

Initial pressings of BEN FOLDS LIVE included a bonus DVD disc.
For his mid-2002 tour, unabashed popster and nouveau piano man Ben Folds decided to do "something a little different." Outside of occasional guest appearances, it was just Folds on stage with his wispy voice and his grand piano. However, as anyone who's ever seen Folds could imagine, the shows were far from stale or restrained or spare, but raucous and rousing and rowdy as the slight Folds relentlessly, torrentially pounded away at the keys and whipped the crowd into frenzy upon frenzy. BEN FOLDS LIVE, recorded at various spots on the tour, accurately captures this spirit.
BEN FOLDS LIVE takes a cross-section of his budding career, drawing from both his first solo record, new songs, and his days ...

| | Steve Stapley Beyond The Blues CD (2008)
Cost
$15.95 Steve Stapley made his first professional recording at Abbey Road in 1968. A few years later, Steve and his then music partner, Richard Markstein, formed what must have been one of the first experimental world music bands in the UK. The band consisted of two Nigerian drummers and a South African guitarist, with Richard on bass and Steve playing acoustic guitar and singing. Soon afterwards, Steve and Richard got signed as a duo by DJM records - around the time when Elton John was becoming huge - where they remained, recording an album, a series of singles and touring the UK. Pete Brown, poet and author of many of the Cream’s classic hits, joined them on percussion and scrabble.Departing the relatively safe but, for him, increasingly unproductive confines of DJM, Steve played clubs and bars in and around London for the following six or seven sleepless years.Moving to LA, where he married and became a house-writer for LEM America, and fronted a couple of rock bands, Steve had some success writing songs for movies and writing English lyrics for French legend, Johnny Halladay’s, Gold Album, En VQ, and for the French No.1 single, ‘Casualty of Love’. After five years in California, he and his wife, returned to England, where he started writing jingles and singing for TV commercials. After the sudden loss of his first wife, Steve was introduced by Mike Finesilver – co-writer of Arthur Brown’s iconic, ‘I am the God of Hellfire’ - to ...
