On his second full-length, BARR--a pseudonym belonging to one Brendan Fowler--revisits many of the same ideas that made his debut BEYOND REINFORCED JEWEL CASE a weirdo's delight. Like the chatterbox at an acid test, BARR lays neurotic, stream-of-consciousness wordplay--don't call them raps--over oddly conceived, slack rhythm loops. By finding a core sexuality in dead pan humor and nerdy microphone ramblings, BARR comes off as something of a Generation-Y answer to Stephen Malkmus. The Wire (p.63) - "Half-sung, half-spoken, but always heartfelt, raw and honest....Fowler delivers essays and epiphanies on the fracture lines and foibles of urban middle youth." Summary
$26.38 2009 four CD set, the ultimate edition of the British Alt-Rock band's 1985 masterpiece. For nearly 25 years, Love has been a consistent seller, endorsing it's classic status in The Cult's repertoire. Designed to cater to the more committed fan, the Omnibus Edition is presented as a limited edition four disc box set with the CD's housed in Japanese-style paper sleeves, reproducing the original vinyl cover art. Apart from the re-mastered original album the box also includes the singles, the demos and a live recording from 1985. Equal parts Psychedelic Hard Rock and New Wave Goth, the songs on Love emanate a bright guitar sheen, tight arrangements, crisp drumming and a command performance from vocalist Ian Astbury. Along with the liner notes, the 48 page book features unseen contact sheets from the album photo session and a chronology of contemporaneous quotes by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy that illuminate the status of the band at that point in their career. 45 tracks. Beggars Banquet.
The Cult's 1984 debut, DREAMTIME, proved to be an intriguing, if sometimes muddled, combination of early U2 and the Doors, topped off with Ian Astbury's ongoing lyrical fascination with Native American mythology. The immediate follow-up, LOVE, was a notable improvement. Ditching the most overt Doors references in favor of moody neo-psychedelia that sounds like a harder-rocking ...

| | Steel Panther Feel The Steel CD (2009)
Summary
$9.99 Like Spinal Tap and several other acts before it, Steel Panther found success mocking the excesses of `80s hair metal while accurately re-creating the genre's musical style. The Los Angeles-based, wig n' spandex-clad quartet delivered a particularly low-brow take on the mock-metal genre with its debut album FEEL THE STEEL. With groan-inducing, intentionally ...
| | Queen Greatest Hits I, II & III: The Platinum Collection CDs (2002) Box Set
Summary
$15.25 Recorded between 1974 & 1997. Includes liner notes by Jim Jenkins, Jacky Smith, Andy Davis, Phil Symes.
With Queen officially enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Hollywood Records reintroduces the band yet again with the release of GREATEST HITS I, II & III. While Volumes I and II are full of Queen classics you already know by heart, the third cobbles together odds and sods from the far corners of Queen's canon along with solo cuts from Freddie Mercury and Brian May.
Opening with the operatic rock classic "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's easy to hear not only how this British quartet achieved the kind of global acclaim that ensured they'd be enshrined alongside the likes of the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. When they weren't dabbling in playful '50s-flavored rock & roll ("Crazy Little Thing Called Love"), catchy glam ("Killer Queen"), or hard-edged funk ("Another One Bites The Dust"), Queen was capable of delivering heartfelt love letters ("You're My Best Friend"). The band's '80s output is equally intriguing, ranging from the hard-hitting "Headlong" to ...
| | Tool Aenima CD (1996)
Summary
$12.29 AENIMA was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. "Aenima" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
On its second full-length album, this hard-rocking quartet delivers 15 tracks of unrelenting aggression and focused intensity. Rather than overwhelm with huge sonic washes of guitar and booming drums, Tool employs a propulsive, snaky approach that makes use of undulating rhythms and clipped, percussive guitar riffs. Maynard James Keenan's vocals follow suit, opting for a heavily processed slow burn instead of the post-grunge bellow favored by so many hard-rock bands. Instead of flailing uncontrollably in all directions, the group's raw, energetic sound is tightly directed for maximum impact.
On songs like "Stinkfist," Keenan rails against injustice while the band churns mercilessly behind him. There is very little humor or light ...
| | Leonard Cohen Live In London CDs (2009)
Summary
$16.99 After taking a decade-and-a-half vacation from live performance, septuagenarian singer/songwriter/saint Leonard Cohen returned to the stage in 2008 for a European tour. During his absence, his popularity had grown to such a degree that his London concert took place at the city's O2 Arena. With the gathered masses sounding suitably enraptured, Cohen can be heard delivering a long program that serves as both career summary and mission reiteration on this double-length live album (FYI, there's also a DVD companion release).
Amazingly, Cohen sounds even more vital and intense than the last time he strode the boards, back in the mid-'90s. For all the high-powered cover versions over the years, his cavernously ...
