On his second full-length, BARR--a pseudonym belonging to one Brendan Fowler--revisits many of the same ideas that made his debut BEYOND REINFORCED JEWEL CASE a weirdo's delight. Like the chatterbox at an acid test, BARR lays neurotic, stream-of-consciousness ... Full Descriptionwordplay--don't call them raps--over oddly conceived, slack rhythm loops. By finding a core sexuality in dead pan humor and nerdy microphone ramblings, BARR comes off as something of a Generation-Y answer to Stephen Malkmus. The Wire (p.63) - "Half-sung, half-spoken, but always heartfelt, raw and honest....Fowler delivers essays and epiphanies on the fracture lines and foibles of urban middle youth." | | Creedence Clearwater Revival Pendulum CD (1970) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
Summary CD music
$8.90 Although not as flawless as 1969's WILLY & THE POOR BOYS or 1970's COSMO'S FACTORY, PENDULUM (also released in '70) certainly has its moments. It may only contain one certified hit single (the chugging, melancholic "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," one of singer/songwriter John Fogerty's best), but both "(Wish I Could) Hideaway" and "Hey Tonight" have become staples on FM classic rock radio over the years, thanks to Fogerty's memorable melodies and inimitably gritty singing style.
Interestingly, PENDULUM is CCR's most ambitious album, with progressive arrangements, instrumentation (including brass and a vocal choir), and a higher gloss to the production. But Fogerty's songwriting is as solid as ever. The album's bluesy opener, "Pagan Baby," with its great guitar riff and tight ensemble playing, remains one of the band's most underrated songs. The ...

| | Obituary Left To Die CD (2008)
Summary songs
$7.18 When you think of death metal, think of Obituary. The Florida band is one of the primary reasons this grim genre flourished in their impossibly sunny home state, and they've been inseparable from death for almost 20 years of recordings. Their new EP, LEFT TO DIE, is a four-song blast from an open grave. Long time fans will recognize "Slowly We Rot" from Obituary's classic debut of the same name. It's been re-recorded and given a spit-polish that makes it sound a bit clearer than it did in its 1989 incarnation. Also present is a cover of prime influence Celtic Frost's "Dethroned Emperor," another nod to Obituary's past, as they also covered Celtic Frost on the landmark CAUSE OF DEATH album. ...
| | Jenny Lewis Acid Tongue CD (2008)
Summary album
$11.18 After the surprising alt-country feel of Rilo Kiley lead singer Jenny Lewis's debut solo album, RABBIT FUR COAT, her band released their most eclectic and self-assured album, 2007's UNDER THE BLACKLIGHT. Lewis's second solo album, ACID TONGUE, neatly synthesizes the best aspects of both those albums with a newfound breeziness of spirit. The 11 songs swing easily from the rockabilly twang of "The Next Messiah" to the sensuous, swirling "Bad Man's World," with the soulful piano ballad, "Trying My Best To Love You," and the noisy rock and roll clatter of "Jack Killed Mom" particularly standing out. Elvis Costello appears on the title track and "Carpetbagger," returning the favor of Lewis's guest vocals on his 2008 album MOMOFUKU. In fact, that Costello album, recorded quickly and with a minimum of studio trickery, is as much of a touchstone for the loose, live-in-the-studio sound of ACID TONGUE as any of Lewis's other recent projects. ...
