On his second full-length, BARR--a pseudonym belonging to one Brendan Fowler--revisits many of the same ideas that made his debut BEYOND REINFORCED JEWEL CASE a weirdo's delight. Like the chatterbox at an acid test, BARR lays neurotic, stream-of-consciousness wordplay--don't call them raps--over oddly conceived, slack rhythm loops. By finding a core sexuality in dead pan humor and nerdy microphone ramblings, BARR comes off as something of a Generation-Y answer to Stephen Malkmus.
Recording information: Knob Monkey, Flagstaff, AZ (06/2006-09/2006).
Personnel: Brendan Fowler (vocals, piano, drums).
Audio Mixer: Greg Casebeer.
The Wire (p.63) - "Half-sung, half-spoken, but always heartfelt, raw and honest....Fowler delivers essays and epiphanies on the fracture lines and foibles of urban middle youth." Summary Review

Summary
$9.55 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no ...

| | Michael Jackson Thriller CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Summary
$3.99 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty of 'Human Nature' (who can resist the 'dada dada da da da') or the 'whoo whoo' of 'Billie Jean'. It's all too good.
Principally recorded at Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California.

| | Epica Design Your Universe CD (2009)
Summary
$13.14 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; frankly, the band should just let Simons do her Sarah Brightman-esque thing and keep the riffs cranking behind her. If you like this sort of thing (Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, ...
