Less than six months after Barenaked Ladies released the well-received BARENAKED LADIES ARE ME in 2006, the good-natured Canadian pop/rock group issued a collection of additional songs recorded during that album's sessions, cleverly entitled BARENAKED LADIES ARE MEN. Like the earlier outing, MEN finds singer/guitarists Ed Robertson and Steven Page and the crew in a relatively straight-ahead mode, often replacing their signature goofiness with a refreshingly streamlined sound, as best revealed on the serene, shimmering "Serendipity" and the jazzy, piano-driven "Beautiful." Even when the band veers into humorous territory, the songs are not as self-consciously quirky as in the past, most notably on the horn-laden, Randy Newman-esque "Angry People."
Other highlights of this solid offering include the energetic "Down to Earth," which is propelled along by an insistent beat and bright New Wavey keyboard lines, and "Half a Heart," a thoughtful, folk-tinged track. A top-notch set that once again reinforces why BNL has such a devoted following, BARENAKED LADIES ARE MEN showcases the act's sharp sense of popcraft even more than its sense of humor.
Barenaked Ladies: Kevin Hearn (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Ed Robertson, Steven Page (vocals, guitar); Jim Creeggan (vocals, strings, bass instrument); Tyler Stewart (drums, background vocals).

Key tracks: Running out of Ink, Letdown, Down to Earth ,Angry People Submitted by georgejedson (Tuscaloosa, AL,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
perfection simply put, this album is just like how Ed Robertson described the song What A Letdown (track 15)...its the perfect amount of rock, with just the right amount of roll. the only song people may be a little weird about I Can I Will I Do, which has a great guitar lick, and is sung entirely falsetto by Steve. people usually arent too partial to the song. i like it, but i think it would have been better for kevin to sing such a high song because his voice is naturally high Submitted by Josh (Newport News, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Barenaked Ladies Are Men
$12.49 Recorded in James Mercer's Basement, Portland, Oregon and Avasti Studio, Seattle, Washington.
When the Shins bowled over music fans and critics alike in 2001 seemingly out of nowhere (but actually out of Albuquerque and years of playing together) with OH, INVERTED WORLD, their stunningly beautiful debut, the comparisons came pouring in. Scribes likened their insistent, melodic sound and James Mercer's hyper-literate, oblique but mellifluous lyrics to many mostly anachronistic, all deeply revered sources, including everything from the Beach Boys to Love.
The follow-up, CHUTES TOO NARROW, meets and often manages to exceed the tremendous, burgeoning buzz surrounding it. Mercer and co. retain all the elements that made their debut delectable, as the melodies flow hither and thither, a subtle rapture confident in its ability to entrance. Delicately crafted yet explosively poetic lines again abound (such as "secretly I want to bury in the yard the grey remains of a friendship scarred"), and by the time the sing-a-long of "So Says I" kicks in, the die is cast. Nestled near the ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Barenaked Ladies Are Men
$11.89 Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing ...
| | Barenaked Ladies Barenaked For The Holidays CD (2004)
Barenaked Ladies Are Men
$9.25 When one considers the ancient holy traditions embodied in Christmas and Hanukkah, the words "wacky," "zany," and "irreverent" are not usually terms that come to mind. These appellations are, however, regularly applied to Canadian acoustic rockers Barenaked Ladies. Strangely enough, on BARENAKED FOR THE HOLIDAYS, this unlikely combination of band and subject matter works splendidly, bringing a heaping helping of joy to the most celebratory of seasons.
The North-of-the-border boys' stunningly eclectic musicianship allows them to employ numerous musical ...

Barenaked Ladies Are Men
$15.65 On BARENAKED LADIES ARE ME--the amiable Canadian rock band's first non-holiday studio outing since 2003's EVERYTHING TO EVERYONE--singer/guitarists Steven Page and Ed Robertson and the lads continue in the vein of that previous album, opting for less overt wackiness than on their 1990s records. Whereas making listeners ...
