With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. Basically, this "greatest hits of all" is simply that: the highest-charting tracks in George Benson's long career -- highest-charting pop and adult contemporary tracks, that is. Benson had been on the scene over a decade before signing with Warner Bros., and many of his jukebox and R&B hits were recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Some of Benson's recorded work that held those hits has been reissued in the past two years. Of the Warner material, they have gauged success by chart placement -- not sales, not radio play, not artist choice. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This title is one of two excellent recordings trumpeter Art Farmer made with Gigi Gryce in the mid-'50s. Gryce not only contributes some fine alto solos but also provides the majority of the material and arrangements. Standouts like his cool, mid-tempo swinger "Satellite" and the Latin-tinged "Sans Souci" provide excellent solo vehicles for both Farmer and pianist Duke Jordan. In fact, the predominantly cool material seems to fit everybody quite well, as evidenced by the stellar ensemble playing on all the tracks (special mention goes to drummer Philly Joe Jones and bassist Addison Farmer [Art's brother] for their particularly empathetic and consistent rhythmic support). Up-tempo cuts like Jordan's "Forecast" and Gryce's "Nica's Tempo" round out a set that qualifies as one of Farmer's best. The New Orleans Owls were a spirited seven- to nine-piece band whose hot jazz and interesting arrangements made them a legendary group to early jazz collectors. The band's entire output, 18 selections from five sessions, is reissued on this highly enjoyable CD from the English label Frog.
