Beverley Mitchell
$8.99 While many of her contemporaries (including Trisha Yearwood and Patty Loveless) imbued their 2005 releases with a traditional bent, Martina McBride went one step further and recorded TIMELESS, an entire album of country classics, many of which date back to the 1950s and '60s. McBride's commitment to these songs is evident both on the disc's extensive liner notes (which present many facts about the tunes, such as who originally performed each one), as well as in her soulful, stirring performances. While every track here benefits from her nuanced delivery, McBride shines the brightest on a buoyant version of Ray Price's "I'll Be There" (with additional singing by Dan Tyminski and Rhonda Vincent), a swooning take on Don Gibson's "I Can't Stop Loving You," and a delicate rendition of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone" (with harmony vocals by ...
| | Danielle Peck CD (2006)
Beverley Mitchell
$9.99 The debut from contemporary country singer Danielle Peck (released on Toby Keith's Big Machine label) marries country twang with mainstream pop smarts, resulting in an album that--while not reinventing the country wheel--is full of sharp, immediately accessible tunes. Peck herself had a hand in composing nearly all of the songs here, which range from anthemic celebrations ("Isn't That Everything"), to barbed ...
| | Lee Ann Womack Call Me Crazy CD (2008) Digipak
Beverley Mitchell
$10.99 After flirting with the pop mainstream with hit singles like "I Hope You Dance," Lee Ann Womack came decidedly back to country with 2005's THERE'S MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM, an unapologetic stylistic throwback to the days when Patsy Cline and Kitty Wells ruled the country charts. While CALL ME CRAZY is nearly as traditionalist in its sound, and every bit as strong as a set of songs, it sounds perhaps a little more contemporary--more Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton than Patsy and Kitty--and includes highlights like first single "Last Call" and a pair of duets with Keith Urban and George Strait. CALL ME CRAZY was released as a vinyl LP as well as a digital download and a standard CD: the once retro but now once again hot format is a perfect fit for the album's back-to-basics charms.
Arrangers: Nashville String Machine; Bergen White.
Personnel: Lee Ann Womack (background vocals); George Strait (vocals); Randy Scruggs, Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason (electric guitar, gut-string guitar); Ilya Toshinsky (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Aubrey Haynie (mandolin, fiddle); Larry Franklin (fiddle); Steve Nathan (accordion, Fender ...
| | Sugarland Enjoy The Ride CD (2006)
Beverley Mitchell
$10.79 With the departure of founding member Kristen Hall, Sugarland slimmed down to a duo. Losing one-third of the formula that made their debut a country/pop crossover smash might seem a daunting proposition, but ENJOY THE RIDE finds remaining members Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush not only surviving but thriving. Nettles's brassy belting has more sass and sex appeal than ever, and the in-your-face attitude on many of the pair's songs is even more brash and boundary-pushing than the most full-throttle moments on 2004's TWICE THE SPEED OF LIFE. ...

| | Carrie Underwood Carnival Ride CD (2007)
Beverley Mitchell
$10.39 The follow-up to the enormously successful SOME HEARTS, former American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's second album moves away from the Shania Twain-like pop influences of her debut into a purer form of country music that focuses on her remarkable voice. Comparisons to Trisha Yearwood, Reba McEntire, and Faith Hill are valid, especially on songs like the twangy first single "So Small." That song is one of four co-written by Underwood; the remaining three are ...

| | Sarah Saulter Wisdom & Luck: Tales Of Love & Magic CD (2007)
Beverley Mitchell
$18.99 NotesIn these tales from places that might have been, you’ll encounter a reluctant fortuneteller, an amorous troll, a pair of talking monkeys, a speechless princess, treacherous siblings, brave heroines, handsome heroes and, perhaps, the answer to a question: is it wisdom or luck that's most important in the life of a human being?BioSarah Saulter grew up in the woods of the Pacific Northwest where she developed an affinity for wild things, and for the wild and mysterious parts of human nature. She told her first tale at the age of three, and has been telling stories ever since. She loves telling tales, because a story is never really finished. It is recreated every time it’s told. And each time you revisit it, it changes, showing you whatever you most needed to discover, or to remember at that moment. Now a resident of San Diego, CA, Sarah has been a professional storyteller for over 15 years. She has performed at the Exchange Place at the National Storytelling Festival, and has been a featured storyteller at colleges, universities, and storytelling festivals throughout California.Reviews“You bring MAGIC to your audiences!” Nancy Jennings—Alpine, CA“I loved hearing these rich old tales told with humor and respect by someone who understands the use of metaphor, who understands that there are layers of meaning, who understands that there's a whole hunk of sex slithering just beneath the surface, and while she doesn't play it up, ...
