Haircut 100's debut album, Pelican West is a widely uneven concoction of lite funk and jazzy new wave pop. Although the group's music was frequently so light it virtually disappeared, they did record a pair of classic new wave singles with the effervescent "Love Plus One" and "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)." Although much of the record lacks the hooks of those two tracks, there's a handful of enjoyably breezy pop songs on Pelican West, such as "Fantastic Day" and "Snow Girl," that makes it worth investigating for new wave fetishists. Still, there's no denying that Haircut 100's material was often inadequate -- a situation only emphasized on the American edition of the album, which places the singles at the front -- and that the record sounded like a period piece just a few years after its release. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Q (11/92, p.133) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "..Their brand of frantic, brassy, two-chord pop funk remains surprisingly fresh and sparky a decade on...infectious and entertaining.." CMJ (1/5/04, p.10) - Ranked #6 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1982". Pelican West Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) No idea where to stick these guys But that doesn't change the fact that this is probably one of my favorite albums yet. The combination of latin influence with the irrepresible enthusiasm the music shows makes this a remarkably fun album. Muscially, these guys were very talented, and I really can't quite see why they didn't go further than they did. Although nothing alike in terms of sound, they're up there with the B-52's for just the sheer amount of fun it is in listening to them, for me at least. One Of The 80's Best Pelican West is 80's music at it's best. It contains track after track of great songs. The high production values and musicianship from Haircut 100 is top notch. The horn arrangements added that extra zing that set this release apart from similar artists of the day. Haircut 100's performance on VH-1's Bands Reunited, awhile back, proved that they were the real deal, and that all these years later, the songs have not lost their punch. Pelican West album
$8.65 First out of the gate with a new band after the English Beat's acrimonious fracture in June 1983, General Public was the first post-punk supergroup, gathering the Beat's Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger, the Specials' Horace Panter, and other veterans of the U.K. ska revival. (Mick Jones, freshly booted from the Clash, was originally announced as General Public's lead guitarist; although he left the group very early on to start up Big Audio Dynamite and doesn't appear in the album photos, his guitar does appear on nearly all of the album's ten tracks.) Frankly, All the Rage could quite easily have been the fourth English Beat album, as it's a clear continuation from 1982's Special Beat Service. The ska sounds are largely absent, replaced by a mixture of catchy Brit-pop -- someone in the group is clearly a fan of both the Beatles and Elvis Costello & the Attractions -- and occasional reggae influences. The closing track, "General Public," is a sneering putdown of British politics and the attendant old boys network, the most political song the boys had written since the days of "Stand Down Margaret" and one of their most effective reggae tunes ever, with echoes of the threatening throb of '70s classics like Culture's Two Sevens Clash. However, more of the album is along ...

| | Radiohead In Rainbows CD
Pelican West songs
$10.69 Initially issued in October 2007 with little prior notice, Radiohead's seventh full-length studio outing, IN RAINBOWS, took not only fans but the entire music industry by surprise. Released for a limited time only as an online download, the album was offered by the revered British rock group in a groundbreaking "pay what you want" format, allowing the listener to decide its digital value before an appearance in conventional CD form a few months later.
Innovative business practices aside, IN RAINBOWS also garnered attention as Radiohead's most immediately ...
| | Black Sabbath Paranoid CDs (1971) (Import) Bonus CD; Bonus DVD; Advd; Deluxe Edition; United Kingdom
Pelican West album
$31.89 PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs in rock history).
2009 digitally remastered and expanded deluxe three CD edition of the classic sophomore album from the Heavy Metal kingpins led by Ozzy Osbourne. Originally released in 1970, Paranoid still stands as an important milestone in the history of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. This ultimate edition features a beautifully remastered version of ...
| | Kylie Minogue Kylie CD (1988)
Pelican West CD music
$12.79 KYLIE is a collection of early Kylie Minogue, bringing together some of the first and best of the Australian popsters extremely successful hits. "I Shoudl Be So Lucky," "It's No Secret," and "Look My Way."
While the production values on Kylie's debut are dated at best and the tunes are nothing but standard late-'80s Stock-Aitken-Waterman bubblegum, there are some rather endearing qualities to it. Firstly, she shows a lot more personality than the other Stock, et al. frontperson, Rick Astley. Secondly, her cuteness makes these ...
