In the liner notes that he wrote for his 2006 session Furious Rubato, Hal Galper discusses the style of playing known as rubato and explains why it interests him so much. The veteran acoustic pianist has a lot to say on the subject of rubato (which, as the website Wikipedia points out, has been used by everyone from Fryderyk Chopin to Megadeth), but Galper (who turned 68 in 2006) really gets to the essence of this post-bop album when he speaks of musicianship that "moves the body in a swirling, circular kind of motion" instead of having a "toe-tapping" effect. Furious Rubato, to be sure, is not toe-tapping jazz; the performances of Galper's cohesive trio (which employs Jeff Johnson on upright bass and John Bishop on drums) are quite impressionistic. Furious Rubato does not contain free-form or radically avant-garde pianism of the Cecil Taylor/Marilyn Crispell variety, but it does favor an approach that Johnson correctly describes as "freedom with form" -- and this album's use of impressionism keeps the intrigue factor high on material by Galper and Johnson as well as interpretations of John Coltrane's "Naima" and two Miles Davis standards: "Miles Ahead" and "Milestones" (the bop song Davis played with Charlie Parker in 1947, not the modal gem he unveiled in 1958). Furious Rubato never goes out of its way to be accessible; this is challenging music, without a doubt. But the rewards are high if one is not intimidated by the complex and the cerebral. ~ Alex Henderson

Best known for his work with Chet Baker, Cannonball Adderley, John Scofield and the Phil Woods Quintet, Hal Galper brings a lifetime of world-class performing experience to his latest group endeavor. Teaming with bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer John Bis

Recording information: Avast Studio, Seattle, WA (06/28/2006).

Personnel: Hal Galper (piano); Hal Galper; Jeff Johnson (bass instrument); John Bishop (drum).

JazzTimes (p.125) - "This album contains the most complex, daring, exhilarating music of Galper's career....The achievement of FURIOUS RUBATO is that it sounds like nothing else yet it makes sense."

Ted Brown Free Spirit CD  (1989)

Furious Rubato album
CD $14.55  Audio Samples
A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse ...

Houston Person Thinking Of You CD  (2007)

Houston Person's recent recordings have seen him removed from the soul-jazz he built a reputation on in his early days, and gravitate toward a refined balladic sound that identifies his older/wiser/mellow persona. For this date, he uses groups varying in size from duo to quartet and sextet, which does mix things up a bit, but keeps Person on the leaner side of mainstream jazz. Not that all the music is laid-back; in fact, two numbers -- the title track and "Sing" -- display a more animated, playful Person on his trusty tenor saxophone. It is his sidemen -- trumpeter Eddie Allen, pianist John Di Martino, and guitarist James Chirillo -- who light coolly burning embers under Person's posterior. Allen in particular is woefully underappreciated, but shows up here on the four larger ensemble selections, working well in tandem alongside Person on the Benny Carter-written Count ...

One for All is a band of New York-based veterans who've played with one another in various combinations, as well as making a number of CDs together under this name with little change in personnel, and of whom all but one are founding members. Featuring tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, trombonist Steve Davis, and trumpeter Jim Rotondi in the front line, plus a rhythm section with pianist David Hazeltine, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth. While each of them (save Webber) works and records often as an individual bandleader, there is an incredible blend of inspired solos, fresh compositions, and arrangements, along with a ...

Stompin' At The Savoy: The New York Allstars Play Lionel Hampton Vol. 2 CD  (2001) (Import) Germany

CD $18.49  Audio Samples
The New York Allstars, under the leadership of trumpeter Randy Sandke, follow up an earlier tribute to Lionel Hampton with a second volume recorded during the same 1998 concert. Half of this swinging octet is made of Americans (guitarist James Chirillo, trombonist Roy Williams, and drummer Eddie Metz) while the rest are from Europe. No attempt is made to copy Hampton's famous recordings or drastically rearrange them -- it is simply good, loose, and inspired playing throughout, with no one musician hogging the spotlight. Sandke has long since earned his stripes as a soloist and bandleader, though he seems appreciated more in Europe. Clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Antti Sarpila and vibraphonist Lars Erstrand, on the other hand, deserve to be better known in the U.S., though their opportunities to perform in the land that gave birth to jazz are few. Pianist Thilo Wagner and bassist ...

The seventh album from German flamenco artist Rafa el Tachuela's work with ARC Records explores the influence of flamenco music on the rumba, and more importantly the influence of the rumba on modern flamenco guitar music. The flamenco usage of the rumba is one of the forms of the Ida y Vuelta (there and back) rhythms in use in modern guitar ...
