At 10 tracks, ULTIMATE may seem a little thin, but the range and level of invention present in those tracks is enough to compensate for the short running time. While some key tracks seem to be missing (his scintillating version of "Birdland" with Weather Report, for example), the selections--"Donna Lee," "3 Views of a Secret" and "Liberty City," among them--show off all the technical dazzle of Pastorious's playing, as well as his formidable skills as an arranger and bandleader. PUNK JAZZ offers a more complete overview, but for a concise sampler of the artist, it's hard to go wrong with this set.
Legendary bassist Jaco Pastorious was involved in so many different projects, and had his fingers in so many musical pies, that it's difficult to get a comprehensive grasp on his oeuvre. For this reason, compilations offer a particularly useful introduction, and 2007's ULTIMATE JACO PASTORIOUS (along with 2003's PUNK JAZZ: THE JACO PASTORIOUS ANTHOLOGY) are good bets.

Ultimate Jaco Pastorius album
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative ...

Ultimate Jaco Pastorius music CDs
$15.99 The soundtrack to Martin Scorcese's two-part PBS documentary on Bob Dylan, NO DIRECTION HOME is a two-disc affair consisting almost entirely of previously unreleased material. One couldn't start any further towards the beginning of Dylan's career than this collection's first track, "When I Got Troubles," a modest, folkish tune caught on tape by a high school friend and presumed to be the first original Dylan song ever recorded. From there, we follow the breakneck trajectory of Dylan's early career, as he develops at an unprecedented rate, from young ...

| | Modern Jazz Quartet European Concert CD (1960)
Ultimate Jaco Pastorius album
$11.59 Recorded live in Scandinavia in April 1960. Originally released on Atlantic (2-603). Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn and Jule Foster.
Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York).
Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath's bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis's piano. The MJQ ...

| | Quintus Mccormick Hey Jodie CD (2009)
Ultimate Jaco Pastorius CD music
$13.09 Delmark Records consistently unearths blues talent heretofore undiscovered, and guitarist/vocalist Quintus McCormick certainly fills that bill. Born in Detroit in 1957, he was listening primarily to rock & roll, but upon a move to Chicago in the late '70s, it took yet another decade for him to discover his calling as a bluesman. This recording shows McCormick has emerged from the shadows of being a sideman (James Cotton, Lefty Dizz, A.C. Reed), leading a band with a horn section and backup singers to present his side of authentic urban music. His acknowledged influence of guitarist Albert King is quite evident in his solos ...
