Following up on the meeting of the progressive-jazz minds that took place on Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau's mostly-duets album METHENY/MEHLDAU, the forward-looking pair expand their partnership to include a rhythm section on most of the songs. In this format, Metheny and Mehldau bring out the best in each other; simultaneously providing a framework for gorgeously melodic lines and egging one another on to the outskirts of improvisation.

Though the guitarist and pianist are of different generations, it's this combination of beauty and bravery that gives them their common ground. On "Silent Movie," for example, they indulge in a lambent feel, slowly unfurling lines of elegance and grace. Meanwhile, the quirky harmonies and free time they get into with "Santa Cruz Slacker," among others, reminds one of why both men remain leading lights of the post-bop world.

5 stars magnificent!
Truly enjoyable collaboration. Enjoyed it from the first time I played it. I have always been a fan of Pat but had never heard Brad play until this and their previous release. Great recording, truly a unique pairing. Love it more each time I play it, which is quite a lot!

I got this a week before I bought Metheny Mehldau. Yeah. It only took a week and I was back at the cd shop grabbing something else by these guys. Check out number one on this cd, it's seriously one of my favorite of 2007.

5 stars supernatural
The music in this album is like coming from the nature, not from human being. Super powerfull and in the mean time extemely innovative with a lot a lot of finesse. The gift of those musicians is unbelievable.I don't know if these guys realize what a great musical, inspiratio nal example they have created. They have moved the game to the next level. Thank you four of you.

Digitally remastered by George Horn (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Recorded in 1984, SUNNY DAYS AND STARRY NIGHTS crackles with energy from the get-go, kicking off with the calypso-flavored Rollins original "Mava Mava." Rollins gives the band room to roam, but it's clearly his show, and he solos with ferocity throughout. "Tell Me You Love Me" reprises the island vibe, with tenor ...

2 LPs on 1 cassette. "Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere" is available seperately on CD. Two of the Rossington Collins Band albums, the 1980 ANYTIME, ANYPLACE, ANYWHERE and 1982's THIS IS THE WAY, are collected in a single release. Hearing these two albums remastered in state-of-the-art sound is a serious revelation -- bands like this, not to mention Lynyrd Skynyrd, really thrive in digital playback, with the triple lead guitars (Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Barry Harwood) cutting a wide, rich swath around Leon Wilkeson and Derek Hess' rhythm section while Bill Powell's majestically soulful organ and rippling piano fill out the body of the sound behind the vocals of Harwood and Dale Krantz. Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere rode the U.S. charts for six months, mostly because it avoided the pitfall of being "Lynyrd Skynyrd lite" (depend on it; there's nothing "light" on the album). The attack on their instruments was meant to be heard live and, barring that, should at least be heard with the kind of sharpness you get here. From the hardest rocking passages to the lyrical bridge that closes the hook-laden "Don't Misunderstand Me," everything is in sharp relief, and when the wattage jumps up in the main body of "One Good Man," Krantz's vocals pretty much fill the room at medium volume, and the guitars combine into something almost larger than life on the break. This Is the Way comes off just as well sonically, and the band was trying something new and different here, aiming for a slightly more subtle and complex sound. Allen Collins -- who was all over the first album as a songwriter as well as a player -- contributed far less to this album's compositions (possibly owing to his personal situation growing out of the death of his wife in 1980), but the one song with his shared composing credit, "Gonna Miss It When It's Gone," has such great hooks all the way through and such a beautiful performance by Krantz on lead vocals that it's one of the highlights of the record, which also included the hauntingly beautiful a cappella number "Pine Box." Collins is on the album as a guitarist, and reasonably visible, making for a full complement of guitarists, but it does seem like Powell is much more visible on keyboards for the second album. Purchasers should note that this BGO release was in print at a time when the label was -- very briefly -- issuing very professionally done CD-Rs rather ...
