One Two Three Four CD music
$15.05 Unlike Bobby Hutcherson's previous super mellow effort For Sentimental Reasons, this recording is charged with increased energy and vitality, inspired by the music of John Coltrane. Hutcherson plays the part of Coltrane's tenor and soprano sax with his vibraphone quite tastefully, while guitarist Anthony Wilson adds a new chordal dimension to the music far different than a woodwind instrument. Pianist Joe Gilman is perfectly matched with his bandmates, a supple, inventive, yet forceful musician who lends great depth to the background, or in tandem with the lead instruments. California drummer and longtime confrère of Hutcherson Eddie Marshall plays as well as ever, while bassist Glenn Richman is ...

| | Nick Colionne Just Come On In CD (2003)
One Two Three Four songs
$13.49 With the release of the guitarist's Three Keys Music debut, the label invites smooth jazz and funk enthusiasts to an exciting, funky party that's been happening in the Chicago area for many years. Likening his own diverse musical pedigree (gigs with Natalie Cole, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green) to the similar sensibilities of R&B/jazz great and studio legend Paul Jackson, Jr., Nick Colionne thought it would be appropriate to ask Jackson to play rhythm guitar on the whimsical, cool, funk-edged "High Flyin'," whose all-star lineup includes percussionist Lenny Castro, bassist Richard Patterson (from David Sanborn's band), trumpeter Orbert Davis, keyboardist John Blasucci, and the Hammond B-3 organ of Ricky Peterson. Most of the collection's other 12 tracks feature the tight ensembling of Colionne's longtime bandmates Brian Danzy (keyboards), Dave Hiltebrand (bass), and Ernie Adams (drums). The heavy bass and organ-driven, blues-funk blast "2BD" was helmed by Three Keys Music president and jazz keyboardist Marcus Johnson, who also co-wrote the disc's lone vocal tune, the lush, urban, adult contemporary-oriented "Is It a Dream" with singer Cynthia Hardy; the track was produced by Johnson and Henry Allen with Colionne. Colionne's Wes Montgomery influence has been obvious with fans and critics alike, and the guitarist pays more direct homage via the shuffle grooving hip-hop tinged "From the Wes Side." Showing even more ...

| | Anita O'Day All The Sad Young Men CD (1961) Import
One Two Three Four album
$28.15 Recorded in New York, New York on October 16, 1961 and at Sunset Recorders, Los Angeles, California from November to December 1961. Originally issued on Verve (8442). Includes liner notes by Dom Cerulli.
Digitally remastered using 22-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios).
One of the greatest of jazz singers, Anita O'Day can also be one of the most erratic. When she's on, O'Day is a brilliant improviser, endlessly creative yet shrewdly paring away any extra-musical excess that might obscure her interpretations. On the occasional off day, O'Day's famous vibrato-less instrument would fail her pitchwise. Ever the unromantic "hip chick," her unconvincing ballads can then be mired in low-energy bathos.
Happily, ALL THE SAD YOUNG MEN is crisply arranged by the ...
