It's unreasonable to expect the reunited Stooges of 2007's THE WEIRDNESS to match the power, intensity, and attitude of their 1969 self-titled debut or 1970's FUN HOUSE. And they don't. However, this disc has much to offer. These aren't the drug-addled, knuckle-headed burnouts who changed the direction of rock-&-roll in one visionary swoop. Rather, this is an older, wiser, and more accomplished set of musicians having fun.

Iggy and the Aeshton brothers (with Mike Watt replacing Dave Alexander on bass) know they have a reputation to uphold, and it's clear from note one that this is a Stooges album. Ron Aeshton's guitar burns with vintage fury, and while it's not as revelatory as it was in the early 1970s, it's still one of the most distinct guitar sounds ever. Iggy's lyrics are less blunt here, but just as wry and bizarre, with "Trolling" and "My Idea of Fun" sounding about as close to old Stooges outtakes as one could hope for. Scott Aeshton clearly wants to show off his new chops, but never at the expense of the band's essential primitiveness. Frankly, THE WEIRDNESS could have been a bloated disaster, but the boys kept things simple and made a record that doesn't necessarily build on the legend, but doesn't tarnish it either.

Recorded in Chicago in October '06 with the esteemed producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies), The Weirdness reunited the three original members with Mike Watt filling in for bass. One of the most eagerly anticipated albums of 2007, The Weirdness is destined to be as inspiring, unpredictable, and undeniable as the three records that preceded it over the three decades ago. The release of the album will be followed by a full world tour that will clearly display the energy, vitality and freshness of one of rock and roll's greatest stories.

Composers: Iggy Pop; Ron Asheton; Scott Asheton.

The Stooges: Iggy Pop (vocals); Ron Asheton (guitar); Steve MacKay (saxophone); Mike Watt (bass instrument); Scott Asheton (drums).Rolling Stone (p.77) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his is a real reunion, with all three living members of the original quartet....Iggy squawks about his favorite topics..."
Spin (p.90) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[A] slick hard-rock set....Ron spews out trashy concise guitar solos as Scott batters the drums in suitably brutal fashion."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.49) - "At its most savage and fearless, THE WEIRDNESS flares with a fire that matches their earlier flailings..."

5 stars Solid Rock
I'll first say that I find the lyrics on this CD a little banal. "My idea of fun is killing everyone," for example. Guess what, though? I don't listen to Iggy Pop and the Stooges for the words, but for huge steaming helpings of rock and roll. In this case, they deliver. Iggy is, of course, Iggy and Ron Asheton's guitar still cuts like a laser through warm butter. More mayhem ensues when Sax maniac Scott Mackay joins the lineup. This music begs to be played loud, and I'm willing to comply.

5 stars Rock and Roll
Turn up the sound, change your normal audio settings and listen to it more than once. Pure staight ahead rock with no adolesent moanings of childhood traumas that seem to be so prevalent in rock today.

3 stars doesn't add, doesn't take away
As a serious music fan for much of my life, I have just loved the notion of comeback albums by bands like the New York Dolls, Budgie, and now the Stooges. In this case however, the album is okay yet nothing to write home about. It is definitely a Stooges album in sound and intent but there are just no ready made classics like Raw Power, Search & Destroy, I Wanna Be Your Dog, TV Eye etc. I agree with the basic sentiment that this record adds nothing to their legend status nor does it take anything away. You get about half an album's worth of good material while the other half is mostly forgettable.

2 stars DO NOT BUY
Just listen to the clips. The entire album isn't any better. Why?

1 star Some things should be left alone
Stooges died long time ago. They left us with timeless music. Now they decide to use the name for a fast buck. This album is so bad, that I'm shamed that I bought it. I'm shock that Iggy let this album to be released. There is no power or anonce of energy in any of these songs. Even Iggy sounds bad on this album. Sounded like he did not even care. Save your money!
