| | Stephen Marley Mind Control CD Stephen Marley Discography of CDs
(5 Customer Reviews)
The second oldest of the late reggae legend Bob Marley's sons, Stephen Marley has maintained a low-profile career since the 1980s, first as a key member of his brother Ziggy's band, the Melody Makers, and more recently as a solo performer. MIND ... Full DescriptionCONTROL is Marley's second solo album, and in the footsteps of his younger brother Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Stephen is incorporating a strong hip-hop influence into his dancehall reggae tunes. Aside from a cover of the old R&B chestnut "Lonely Avenue," the songs are all originals that layer urban beats and occasional nods to Afrobeat and flamenco with Marley's deep reggae roots. Damian guests on the single "Traffic Jam," Mos Def drops in on "Hey Baby," and Ben Harper appears on the soulful "Inna di Red."
Standard Screen; Soundtrack EnglishRolling Stone (p.82) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "There are moments during this middle Marley boy's debut album that you can drift off and imagine you're listening to a long-lost B side from his dad....MIND CONTROL does justice to Bob Marley's legacy..." Entertainment Weekly (p.60) - "[A]n assured balance of new-school beats and old-school island flourishes." -- Grade: B+ Mojo (Publisher) (p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[H]e has unleashed a confident and varied reggae album that incorporates hip hop, R&B, rock and even flamenco influences." | | Pretty Ricky Bluestars CD (2005)
Mind Control CD music
$9.99 "Get You Right," a smooth throwback ballad from Miami outfit Pretty Ricky's debut, BLUESTARS, features a hardcore rap that name-checks 1990s groups H-Town and Jodeci. While the four youthful brothers of Pretty Ricky were likely in grade school when these artists had their hits, it's a fitting reference; the quartet's sound reveals an innate feel for the New Jack Swing sound of that time. This approach is evident in both the record's production and its raw sensuality, and the overall vibe is updated with a Dirty South sensibility.
Pretty Ricky features three rappers--Slick, Spectacular, and Diamond--augmented by the resonant voice of Pleasure, whose alluring style ...
| | Damian Marley Welcome To Jamrock CD (2005)
Mind Control music CDs
$12.05 The huge success of "Welcome to Jamrock," released as a single early in the summer of 2005, raised expectations for Damien Marley's same-titled full-length. Fortunately, everything--from the progressive blend of reggae, hip-hop, trip-hop, pop, and roots within, to the crisp production from brother Stephen Marley--lives up to the hype. While it would be an easy commercial move for Damien to replicate the positive roots vibe of his father's reggae, he instead builds on the consciousness of that music and updates the sound for the 21st century.
Tinged with overtones of dancehall ("Khaki Suit") and urban contemporary R&B (the silky smooth "Beautiful," which features a cameo from Bobby Brown), WELCOME TO JAMROCK is a melting pot of an album, one as well suited to the ...

$13.05 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes ...
| | Amy Winehouse Back To Black CD (2006)
Mind Control album
$11.95 BACK TO BLACK's production is an artful blend of sophisticated '60s R&B and 21st-century stylistic poaching, with "Tears Dry on Their Own" incorporating elements of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and Winehouse sounding like Billie Holiday fronting a reggae band on the old-fashioned cheating song "Just Friends." Densely packed with musical history and often conjuring a dark, Portishead-esque atmosphere, BACK TO BLACK is a sumptuous-sounding collection freighted with blunt confessionals of a lush life.
It doesn't take much listening to Amy Winehouse's 1960s pop period piece to realize that this is a tribute with an edge--nice girls back then didn't sing about boozing and rehab. Since her 2003 debut album, FRANK, Winehouse has been a frequent presence on the gossip pages of the U.K. tabloids, and her songwriting here candidly reflects her experiences with drinking, sex, and drugs.
Personnel: Amy Winehouse (background vocals); Binky Griptite, Thomas Brenneck (guitar); Helen Tunstall (harp); Perry Montague-Mason, Chris Tombling, Tom Pigott-Smith, ...
