Purchase Celtic CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Enya And Winter Came... CD (2008)
Celtic
$11.85 Unlike Enya's 2006 EP, CHRISTMAS SECRETS, with which it shares no tracks, AND WINTER CAME is not a traditional Christmas album. It's more impressionistic than most, placing a handful of Christmas songs such as "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" in the midst of a shimmering soundscape of keyboards, strings, and Enya's trademark overdubbed vocal chorales. The mostly original material does an exceptional job of evoking a comforting midwinter landscape without resorting to sleigh bells or other Christmas music clichés. Highlights include "White Is in the Winter Night," "Last Time By Moonlight," and the evocative, childlike "Trains and Winter Rains." AND WINTER CAME is an unusual but lovely addition to the Christmas music pantheon.
Recording information: Aigle Studio.
Photographer: Simon Fowler.
Arrangers: Enya; Nicky Ryan.
Personnel: Enya (vocals, various instruments); Pat Farrell & the Believers (guitar, 12-string guitar).
Audio Mixer: Nicky Ryan.

| | Corrs Talk On Corners CD (1998)
Celtic
$13.95 This special edition of TALK ON CORNERS features several remixes and tracks previously not included on the album.
Additional personnel includes: The Chieftans, Paddy Moloney, David Foster.
The Corr family's music hit big in Europe before making it's way to America, so the U.S. label folks had a little time to prepare something special for the American release of TALK ON CORNERS. Consequently, the U.S. edition of the album contains songs not included on the original European album, as well as additional remixes of some of the tunes.
The Corrs' mixture of contemporary pop with traditional Irish influences is certain to appeal to audiences in both camps. Any album that features guest appearances from both David Foster and the Chieftains is bound to have some serious cross-market appeal. The Corr siblings are no instrumental slouches either, and their tasty contributions on traditional pop/rock instruments (as well as tin whistle, bodhran, etc.) are the foundation of the genre-defying construct that is TALK ON CORNERS.
UK version of the Celtic pop act's 1998 release with a different tracklist than the domestic version currently available. Non U.S. tracks, 'Dreams', 'What Can I Do?', 'So Young', 'Don't Say You Love Me', 'Love Gives Love Takes', 'Paddy McCarthy' and 'Intimacy'. 14 tracks in all. 1998 release. Standard jewelcase.
Recorded at The Bunker, Wrexham, Wales.
The Corrs: Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Jim Corr (guitar, accordion, keyboards, programming); Sharon Corr (violin, background vocals); Caroline Corr (drums, bodhran, background vocals).
Producers: David Foster, Oliver Leiber, Jim Corr, Glen Ballard, John Hughes.

| | Makem & Clancy In Concert CD (1990)
Celtic
$14.65 This live performance, by two of the most beloved and respected Irish folk musicians, embodies the true spirit of this traditional genre. In their own words, "It would be utterly impossible to capture all the excitement, color, smell and exhilarating aura of our concert tour in Ireland in the summer of 1977." However, this 15-song CD does give us a joyous glimpse of the music of these two folk icons. Moreover, with all of the humorous banter heard in between songs, we get a good idea of these two singers' unique personalities and incredible stage charisma.
THE MAKEM & CLANCY CONCERT features a varied program. Old songs such as "O'Dunnell Abu," "The Rocky Road to Dublin," and "The Cobbler" are heard here. In addition, newer material, "The 200 Year Old Alcoholic" and "The Rambles of Spring" show the song writing skill of Makem and Clancy respectively. Finally, we hear Liam Clancy recite Baudelaire's famous prose poem that begins, "Be always drunken."
Personnel: Tommy Makem (vocals, banjo).
Recording information: Gaiety Theatre, Dublin, Ireland (07/25/1977-07/30/1977).
| | Celtic Folk Festival (Munich) CD (1996) (Import) Netherlands
Celtic
$14.75 Recorded at two Dutch folk festivals in the early 1980s, this has good performances by some of the biggest names in British Isles traditional folk/folk-rock, including Clannad, Andy Irvine, the Tannahill Weavers, Silly Wizard, and Battlefield Band. The program's rounded out by three lesser-known acts from Brittany (Kornog, Dan Ar Bras, and Sonerien Du). Material, sound, and performance are good, and while it may not be the first place you should stop to check out the artists, it's a good addition for those building a deep Celtic collection. Incidentally, the Clannad tracks were recorded during their first performances with then-14-year-old Enya in the lineup; the Silly Wizard cut is one of the few recordings of the group with Dougie McLean. ~ Richie Unterberger
Performers include: Clannad, The Battlefield Band, Andy Irvine, Gerry O'Beirne, Kernog, Sonerien Du, Dan Ar Bras, The Tannahill Weavers, Silly Wizard, Jamie McMenemy's Kornog.
| | Celtic Tides: A Musical Odyssey CD (1998)
Celtic
$10.79 Includes liner notes by Martin Melhuish, Mark Hall, Greg Hall.
One of the earlier entries in Putumayo's extensive catalogs, Celtic Tides is a collection of relatively expansive works of modern Celtic music pre-dating at least some of the craze in Celtic sounds that would come in the years to follow. The sounds here range from the well-known old guard members (the Rankin Family, the Chieftains, Clannad) to the slightly newer, slightly more forward-reaching (Altan, Natalie MacMaster) to the lesser-known (Seamus Egan, Dougie MacLean). Along with the progression through the years of development of modern Celtic, there is the geographic development, with artists from Ireland and Scotland certainly, but also the Cape Breton traditions from Canada and even the odd Californian traditionalists. The music is excellent throughout, with standout performances from the Old Blind Dogs (on the more traditional end) and Capercaillie (in the realm of fusion). Overall, it's a nice, relaxed collection of Celtic sounds that relies more on the sheer musical abilities of the groups rather than the stereotypical sounds that veer in and out of authentic grounds. Certainly worth a listen for fans of the genre, but also a nice point to start explorations for newcomers. ~ Adam Greenberg

| | Sarah Vaughan W/ Clifford Brown CD (1955)
Celtic
$11.39 Recorded December 16 and 18, 1954, in New York. Originally released at Emarcy (36004). Includes liner notes by Michael Bourne.
This album joined the talents of legendary jazz singer Sarah Vaughan with those of 24-year-old wonder-trumpeter Clifford Brown for a December, 1954 released on Mercury Records subsidiary EmArcy. A warm and welcoming hiss washes over this album, giving it a graceful, familiar patina. One feels like a privileged listener let in on an intimate closed session.
Brown's playing is sharp and confident throughout, and at times even bears a bit of a racy, histrionic edge. But it is clearly Vaughan who steals the show in this set. The opening and closing strains of "Jim" demonstrate her peerless intonation, as her voice blends with the rest of the instruments to create a mellifluous whole. On "Lullaby of Birdland," Vaughan wallows around her soupy lower register only seconds before breaking into some bebop maneuvering. It is interesting to listen to what kind of interpretive character her tight vibrato and winsome pitch-modulation bring to standards like "September Song," and the Gershwins' "Embraceable You." This is a thoroughly representative collection from one of jazz's all-time greats.
