Oliver believes that music should resonate the whole listener (intellect, emotion, and body). John Oliver came to international attention during 1988/89 when he won six prizes for five compositions ranging from chamber to orchestral to electroacoustic music. He won the Canada Council's Grand Prize at the 8th CBC 8th National Competition for Young Composers for his live electronic work with tape, "El Reposo del Fuego." His electroacoustic music has been presented at many international festivals in Europe and the Americas. Oliver's "classical" music has been performed by the Canadian Opera Company, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony, the CBC Radio Orchestra, Vancouver New Music, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, among others. His music appears on CDs from empreintes DIGITALes, earsay, CBC Records, ZaDiscs, SNE and McGill University Records. The trilogy as a whole is a tribute to the Appalachian String Band Music Festival held each August near Clifftop, West Virginia. The Cliffhangers record presents some source material that has inspired and instructed us for the past decade or more at Clifftop. The two Clifftop Notes albums, as the name suggests, are selected from tunes I composed at or around Clifftop, played with musical friends who have inspired and midwifed creation of those very tunes over the years.Our original concept was to do two companion albums, of traditional and original tunes respectively. 1. The Lions of Ramallah One night at dinner Basam told the story of the lions in Ramallah square, a place familiar to TV viewers during the two intifadas. The lions were designed by an Italian designer and he was sending the final drawings to the municipality of Ramallah or who ever had commissioned them, and since the payment was late he penciled in a watch on one of the lion's paws as a reminder to send the check.
