Dennis Coffey is an American guitarist, notable as a prominent studio musician for many Soul and R&B recordings. Coffey recorded 'Scorpio' which was a million selling single and in 1972 'Taurus', both with The Detroit Guitar Band. Since then, he has recorded several solo albums. In the early '70s, Dennis Coffey, Motown ''Funk Brother'' and super-session guitar man, seemed determined to write soundtracks even if he wasn't commissioned by a Hollywood studio. Indeed, the four studio albums he cut for the Sussex label between 1971 and 1974, from which this compilation is culled, are like a big personal advertisement for potential film score work. Coffey's raw, compressed guitar style - his Big City Breakbeat Funk - certainly evokes a tough, urban landscape inhabited by tough, urban gangsters. Although the music of North Africa and the Middle East has been thoroughly covered elsewhere, this compilation nonetheless offers a wealth of fresh pleasures and insights. The artists are all major figures in their respective markets. If the tunes sometimes lapse into garish electronica, this is perfectly authentic and all of them are redolent of their ancient origins in one way or another. In any case, there are enough acoustic lutes, frame drums, woodwinds, and fiddles on hand to mollify die-hard roots fans. Morocco is represented by an example of Sha'bi, a blues-like sound much favored by the working class, but also harbors various types of stately Arabe-Andalous orchestras hearkening back to pre-reconquista Granada. Amr Diab, a pouty-lipped Egyptian teenybopper idol, rubs elbows here with Tunisian pop star Faouzi Ben Guamra. Gnawa trance musicians hold sway in Algeria, but Chaba Zahouania is a latter-day female exponent of the famously rebellious rai style. Between 1969 and 1973, the Trojan label released over 200 singles on its Upsetter imprint, a subsidiary label dedicated to music produced and/or performed by the great Lee "Scratch" Perry and his house band, the Upsetters. This two-disc set is the second in a series of reissue compilations; Volume 1 consisted of 50 tracks originally released between 1969 and 1970, and this one concentrates on releases from 1970.
