If there's one thing that fans of extreme metal can count on, it is that many bands will experience lineup changes. Replacing a guitarist, bassist or drummer can be challenging, but replacing a lead singer is even more challenging because the absence of a familiar voice is so noticeable. With their third full-length album, Stuck Here on Snakes Way, Finnish death metallers Omnium Gatherum unveil a new lead singer: Jukka Pelkonen, who replaced Antti Filppu. The good news is that Pelkonen works out well; he has a gruff, menacing delivery that is perfect for the band's blistering high-speed assault. Omnium Gatherum has often been described as a melodic death metal band, and Stuck Here on Snakes Way does have some occasional melodic passages. But ultimately, this 2007 release is about vicious bombast and crushing exhilaration rather than melody, intricacy or nuance. Of course, the fact that Omnium Gatherum uses keyboards extensively is bound to result in some people assuming that the material is ultra-melodic; some death metal (and black metal) enthusiasts automatically think melodic the minute they hear the word keyboards. But the important thing is not the very presence of keyboards, but how they are used, and on Stuck Here on Snakes Way, they are used in a manner that is spacy but doesn't make for a great deal of melodic appeal. Regardless, it's an interesting contrast when those spacy keyboards are heard alongside Omnium Gatherum's furious thrashing -- an unlikely contrast that helps to keep this CD from sounding generic. Stuck Here on Snakes Way is somewhat uneven, but the tunes are decent more often than not -- and those who acquired their previous releases will be glad to know that there is indeed life after Filppu for Omnium Gatherum. ~ Alex Henderson Stuck Here On Snakes Way Music Omnium Gatherum Stuck Here On Snakes Way Songs Stuck Here On Snakes Way Review

$13.29 When bad boys mature, they don't necessarily quit being bad boys, but they do become more complex and multi-faceted. They may evolve into the deep-thinking Pedro Almodóvar of All About My Mother, Talk to Her and Bad Education rather than the younger Almodóvar, who had so much fun with screwball dark comedies like What Have I Done to Deserve This and Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down. They may evolve into the Marlon Brando of The Godfather, instead of the punky young Brando of A Streetcar Named Desire. And in death metal, that quest for maturity has given us the nuanced world of melodic death metal -- a world that death metal's stubborn, myopic purists denounce as watered down, but a world in which engaging albums like Above the Weeping World are created. Anyone who doubts that death metal has more than one flavor (ultra-fast, amelodic and consistently vicious) needs to give this 52-minute CD a very close listen. Insomnium's sense of melody and ...

$10.15 Billboard Magazine"Driven down pop alley: Driver X is solid proof that earnest, pop infected rock music still lives deep in the heart of New York City. The quintet, ably fronted by singer/tunesmith Will Croxton, is currently shopping a demo that will tickle the ears of listeners who subscribe to the intimate introspective fare of bands like Travis and Coldplay. Such standout cuts as the strummy "Daylight" and the delightfully harmonious "Carry Me Home" manage to exude boyish sensitivity without ever sounding wimpy or cloying. Croxton and his bandmates do a good job of keeping the arrangements muscular and reasonably aggressive without ever overpowering Croxton's notably intelligent lyrics and melodies.Jane MagazineThis Brooklyn rock band is part punk rock, part hook-driven pop, with smart cool lyrics that you'll commit to memory in no time. I cleaned my closet out while blaring it and the time flew. THE BAND:WILL CROXTON - singer, songwriter, guitarist - started with the DC-based garage-punk band DT and the Shakes. The band released the acclaimed EP "Smooth Studio Crafted Teen Fodder" and followed with 2 more albums. He relocated to New York City where he co-formed the indie-rock lab rat Idle and released 3 cds (and various tracks) on the Big Deal label from 1993 to 1998. Autocratic envy and a booming economy fueled the band's split in 1999 and Croxton formed Driver X. He aspires to Driver X being as badass as J.T. Walsh.BRIAN PATTERSON - drums. To his knowledge, Brian Patterson is the only Irish-Jew to ever immigrate to New York City from the voodoo drenched suburbs of Savannah, Georgia. Raised on a steady diet of ham and collard greens, kugel, gefilte fish, and pork cracklin's, he is prone to dance the Jig and the Hora simultaneously! Known affectionately to his friends as "McHeeb", He has never been able to distinguish between pedophilic rabbis and kindly, good-natured priests...or was that the other way around? In any event, he remains deeply troubled. As with many people blessed with Irish blood, Brian has a natural talent for hitting things. Once his sister developed ...
