Elusive Mythical Album Finally Released
I saw the 12" single for "By Way Of The Drum on the rack around 1989 at Rhino Records in Westwood while attending college and passed on it, thinking I would buy the album when it eventually came out. I didn't know then that it would be almost 20 years before the album would eventually be released! Not a great Funkadelic album compared to their earlier classics on Westbound and Warner Bros but as an historical footnote it's great to hear the direction Clinton and co. were heading at that time. Heavily reliant upon electronic drums and displaying some early glimpses of Clinton's incorporation of hip hop into P-Funk's lexicon, the album misses the hardcore funk and guitar assault of earlier Funkadelic efforts (although Blackbyrd McKnight gamely tries to make up for it on the cover version of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love"). Some filler material weakens the album as a cohesive effort but all in all, a release of great interest for P-Funk aficionados and compulsive completists. Like me.

SLIGHT CORRECTION
In response to the last review, this is not a new recording by Funkadelic. This recording was done around 1984-85. It was recently discovered by Harry Weinger at Universal Music. It was supposed to be released in 1989 after George Clinton a production deal with MCA records.
In that context, this is an exceptional set by the Funk Mob. While there are some standard 1980's sounding keyboards/ drum machines throughout the recording, the guitar work normally associated with Funkadelic is still heavy in the mix courtesy of Blackbyrd McKnight and Eddie Hazel. Stand out cuts include "Beware Of Freaks Bearing Gifts", the title cut(in it's original form) and "Jugular".
