SONGS OF INSPIRATION II, the follow-up to the best-selling SONGS OF INSPIRATION, adds 12 more traditional gospel tunes to the band's canon, plus a recasting of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Guests include the Del McCoury Band on the bluegrass standard "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and Western swing stalwarts Riders in the Sky for a harmony-heavy "Love Lifted Me." Other highlights include the Johnny Cash tune "Suppertime" and a folky take on "I Am A Pilgrim."

This double-CD set from WEA International contains three albums by the Dillards -- Pickin' and Fiddlin', Wheatstraw Suite, and Copperfields -- that are all regarded as classics in their respective musical subgenres. So on its face, this is an extraordinarily attractive set, with great sound and full annotation. Indeed, the only thing that would prevent any Dillards fan from buying this set is the fact that all three albums have also appeared from Collectors' Choice in the United States. Grand Funk Railroad's most potent and primal recordings (such as Closer to Home and their 1970 live album) were cut as a power trio, and even their more polished later work on We're an American Band and Shinin' On only added a keyboard player to the mix, so when GFR guitarist and singer Mark Farner went into the studio to cut his second solo album in 1978, the LP's title summed up the approach: No Frills.
