John Foxx Modern Art: Best Of CD - Import

This release compiles some of the better alternate dance mix and extended single tracks from Foxx's prime early-80's period. Some stand the test of time better than others, but one must keep in mind at the time, this was cutting-edge pop music. I look at "Modern Art" as the companion CD to 1992's "Assembly". That CD covers much more ground on the album cuts from Foxx's first four pop releases, whereas MA focuses on the top 40 singles. A sprinkling of latter-day ambient work from his late-90's work seems a bit disjointed, but enjoyable nonetheless. It is nice to finally have some of the more obscure single remixes on CD finally, although I still pull out my double-45 gatefold sleeves to enjoy the artwork while listening. Foxx's music would be a natural for DVD/DTS allowing a shifting pastiche of his art and photography to display in tandem with the music. However, such a niche artist will never have the purchasing power to warrant such an investment by a record label, even if the artist himself "owns" it.
