Angular Perceptions album
$12.69 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed by a footnote nod to Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing on vocal-based, song-oriented material ("I Walk Beside You," "The Answer Lies Within"); much in the spirit of AWAKE and their breakthrough album IMAGES AND WORDS. "Sacrificed Sons" captures the heartbreak of the 9/11 tragedy, while the grandiose title track showcases a melodic, Styx-inspired keyboard solo by Jordan Rudess (better known ...

New Jersey prog-metal stalwarts Symphony X return with PARADISE LOST, their first outing since 2002's THE ODYSSEY. Their literary aspirations remain intact--the album is inspired by the John Milton epic poem of the same name--and per usual, Michael Romeo's Byzantine tablature and Russell Allen's vocals are the main attractions. Throughout PARADISE LOST the band fantasizes that all '80s thrash and '90s doom metal did ...

Angular Perceptions album
$13.35 On FEAR OF A BLANK PLANET, Porcupine Tree follows up its well-received DEADWING album with another highly ambitious outing. Fronted by vocalist/guitarist Steven Wilson (No-Man), and featuring keyboardist Richard Barbieri (formerly of the pioneering New Wave act Japan), the London-based art-rock ensemble continues its simultaneously heavier and more sophisticated direction, as embodied by the atmospheric and melodic "Way Out of Here," which veers into some crushingly weighty passages. Though clearly influenced by Roger Waters's Pink Floyd material, Wilson's distinctive and dynamic approach, which can be alternately ...

This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series.
Six years after the fairly extensive Whitesnake compilation GREATEST HITS was released came the slightly shorter set 20th CENTURY MASTERS. When you think back to '80s hair/glam/pop/party metal, Whitesnake was one of the genre's kings, as evidenced by any one of the 12 tracks on 20th CENTURY MASTERS.
If you want to sample one of the '80s' biggest ...

Angular Perceptions Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Fantastic Prog! Great songs.. great playing.. held my interest for the full duration! Submitted by Richard (Wallingford, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Amazing New Michael Harris Band Michael Harris' latest offshoot band, Thought Chamber, is a direct reflection from his CD, "Sketches From the Thought Chamber" transformed into a new side-band project. This one introduces a new singer from the band Enchant. There's some tracks that include harmont singing by more than one vocal track which really enhances the sound tremendously and takes Michael Harris' music to a new level without sacrificing any of his incredible guitar work that we have become to know so well from his many previous CD's. He even takes his skills to new heights on this latest effort incorporating more advanced picking styles with amazing speed and dexterity -- all the while creating complex, yet melodic passages that are instantly recognizable.
This is, by far, Michael's finest release of his entire career and an incredible "progression" (that word will make him happy if he reads this, LOL) in his quickly blossiming career in the progressive metal industry. I believe that this rendition of Michael's many pursuits that he has been apart of lately (Vitalij Kuprij, MHT band, etc.) will be the big breakthrough which will spring him into the forefront of world-wide interest and hopefully, world-wide tours. One of Best 2007 Albums Almost tracks are unforgettable, and the songs have many great riffs. Even Mr. Twinkle's Theraphy (the worst point on the album, because it's more technical than artistic) is a great track, and songs such as Sacred Treasure, Balance of One or God of Oblique are favourited on my playlists forever.
