Given that Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Michael Penn averages about four years in between records, listeners can rest assured that his discs are meticulously crafted, and MR. HOLLYWOOD JR. 1947 is no exception. Penn opted for the concept-album approach on this 2005 release, focusing on the post-World War II lives of characters in his hometown. While bright pop melodies are Penn's stock in trade, he varies the mood enough to keep the album consistently engaging, resulting in one of his most impressive outings.

Magnet (p.106) - "Penn conjures a palpable sense of place. He does so, for the most part, via warmly articulate, flawlessly executed Fab Four-friendly pop." Dirty Linen (p.87) - "The disc is moody and has almost has the feel of a film score. Definitely an interesting and thought-provoking piece."
