Timeless Jazz album
$14.99 A sequel of sorts to Chris Botti's 2006 PBS special, LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA & SPECIAL GUESTS, the September 2008 event LIVE IN BOSTON found the sartorially splendid cool jazz trumpeter accompanied by the Boston Symphony and a collection of celebrity vocalists. Also available as a DVD, the concert delivers an overview of popular music, with jazz standards like "I've Got You Under My Skin" right alongside "Ave Maria" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." Whether featuring rocker Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL chanteuse Katharine McPhee, or pop-opera superstar Josh Groban, all the tunes are presented in Botti's inimitable, Chet Baker-influenced uber-smooth style.
Chris Botti in Boston features trumpeter Chris Botti along with a bevy of name artists performing live with the Boston Pops Orchestra at Symphony Hall in 2008. Fully documented as a concert film and album, the night is an intimate and soulful birds-eye view of the supple-toned trumpeter who has grown into his role as a virtuoso since his time backing up Sting -- who of course appears here. Perhaps it isn't surprising then the concert is subtly reminiscent of Sting's own classic coming of age concert ...

| | Tim Finn Say It Is So CD (2000)
Timeless Jazz album
$14.49 On his fourth solo release, Tim Finn, the some-time Crowded House member (he sang/wrote on the band's WOODFACE album) and founding member of the '70s-'80s band Split Enz found himself recording in Nashville, recruiting producer Jay Joyce, who'd produced an album for Patty Griffin, and Wilco drummer Ken Coomer to help out. The resulting album sounds like it was made it Nashville by way of New Zealand.
While Finn is not as sentimental in his songwriting as his younger brother Neil, they're both gifted in creating clever, pretty pop songs that have won them fans worldwide. "The Death of a Popular Song" the single from the album, is an ironic, poppy tune; other noteworthy numbers include the pedal-steel number "Good Together," and "Underwater Mountain." SAY IT IS SO is an album that shows signs of Nashville without sacrificing Tim Finn's graceful, conversational singing ...

Timeless Jazz CD music
$12.39 This rare album from singer/pianist Tânia Maria, backed by bassist Hélio and drummer Boto, documents that in the mid-'70s, the swinging samba-jazz interpreter was already developed -- even if still closely emulating Elis Regina. The album opens with the heavy pounding of "Samba de Orly" (Vinícius de Moraes/Chico Buarque de Hollanda), and the same atmosphere follows with a Jorge Ben medley, giving room to the lyrical "Até Quem Sabe" (Lysias Enio/Joao Donato). "Abre Alas" traces very closely Elis Regina's take. Another Ben classic, "Fio Maravilha" (which was written in homage to the celebrated soccer player Fio, from Botafogo, ...
